This is a sweet little book, poignant and moving. Inspired by the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby we are given a further glimpse into the realms of loneliness and how it exists on our doorsteps. Father McKenzie the main protagonist shows us how profoundly lives can be touched by a simple listening ear.

"Film historians name it the return of JLG to commercial cinema (after his '70s experiments). If so, let's all be commercial. A film with thousands of cinematic ideas, brilliantly moving and emotionally brilliant. Also, an enormous, terrible and funny scene which connects sex with social hierarchy, sound with image, film directors with CEOs."

"The narrator of this novel works at a Tokyo convenience store and loves the routine of the job; she is also something of an anthropologist, noting her observations of human behavior in a distant and yet utterly open way. Watching her try to participate in the world is both moving and unsettling."
