"Paradieswärts Düül is the best. The first group, they allowed all the kids, all the mothers, all the dogs, it was true democracy. Chaos in action. There’s those four beautiful records that are all from the same forty-eight-hour jam that are unlistenable. But then there’s this record that came after Amon Düül began making an amazing career for themselves. The guys that were a bit more musican-ly than the other ones shuffled off into a room and started to make their own record. It’s just so fragile, it’s almost like the first death-folk record. It’s just so beautiful. The musical interplay is great. They are very much of their times, too. There’s an idealism there, that you can't substitute. It’s the darkest, dimmest, saddest, obscure record."

"This was the point where Steve Miller set up his own studio and started recording in his own time. He lost himself in that process. I love his take on music – it's his own brand of psychedelia. It's very blissful on one hand, very groovy on the other. He created his own musical world and almost ends up referencing himself rather than taking influences from other people. I love it when an artist has a feedback loop to their own music. The first track, 'Song For Our Ancestors', is the one for me. It's soundtrack-y, incredibly evocative. It starts with a giant foghorn and this beautiful tremolo guitar that seems to emerge from the mists. Again, it's taking you somewhere, imagining this other world, albeit rooted in history rather than just imagination."

"I’m going to cite probably a really odd one: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Catherine Deneuve – it’s a musical in the 1960s, and I think that’s the best example of utilizing color and production design in a film that’s been done in the history of cinema. Basically it’s stunning and it’s a really delightful, buoyant film about love and friends. It’s just a beautiful, beautiful movie and probably not what your readers would have thought I might have picked. I use The Umbrellas of Cherbourg as an example of how color can inform a character’s internal head space. I’ve used that many, many, many times in my projects — I’ve pointed production designers, writers, and cinematographers to that film as an [example of how to use] color. It’s a cool movie."
