Nostalgia Perfected
Stranger Things is everything I wanted J.J. Abrams' Super 8 to be, and more. The atmosphere of the show is pitch-perfect and well established from the very first episode. The creeping tension builds until it touches the viewer's core and finally "resolves" in a full-on creature feature of a final episode. Like any good mystery/thriller TV show, it saves plenty of mysteries for future seasons. Here's to hoping the Duffer brothers don't bungle it up like Hemlock Grove after the interesting mysteries in its first season. Stranger Things is a much better show, however, and the Duffer brothers seem to have a much better idea of where this story is going. The child actors are all fantastic, and of the few notable adults/teens, David Harbour is my favorite. I cannot wait for season two in October (the kids have Ghostbusters Halloween costumes!).

Twenty Great Puzzles and Mysteries for You to Solve
This book for middle grade readers features twenty stories by members of Mystery Writers of America. Each story provides the clues and puzzles you need to solve it along with the characters. In fact, the solutions are at the back of the book to give you time to figure out what is really going on before you see if you got it right. While a few authors feature series sleuths, most of the stories feature original characters.

And all of them are fun. Many are straight up mysteries, but some feature puzzles we can learn about and solve with the characters along the way. The stories average about 15 pages each, so they would work well for reading aloud and solving as a group. It might take a group to solve some of them. I figured a few out, but many left me stumped until I turned to the end. There isn’t a bad story in the bunch, and kids will certainly enjoy this collection as much as I did.

Annie Darling has been plotting a harbor cruise to raise funds for a local charity. But the mystery themed event turns real life mystery when someone falls overboard. While everyone thinks it was an accident, Annie is sure it was murder. But can she figure out what happened before another tragedy strikes?

I’ve been looking forward to this book since the title is so fun. I’m glad to say it lived up to my expectations. Yes, I’m tired of law enforcement not taking Annie seriously, but on the whole, I enjoyed seeing the characters again. The mystery is very well done with plenty of good suspects, twists, and red herrings. Yet things made sense at the end. Since we are now in the era when I was reading mysteries, I enjoy seeing some of those books pop up in the references to real mysteries this series is famous for. If you are a fan of this series, you’ll be glad you picked this one up.

I keep saying that I don’t like reading book series. I’m clearly lying, because read them I do (historical fiction = one of my great weaknesses!)

These Daniel Pursglove books are on my list of “Series I didn’t want to read and now I’m addicted to”, and they all seem to be historical fiction mysteries. Because, y’know, I don’t like mysteries either.

So! Daniel Pursglove is a spy in the early 1600’s and here he is, embroiled in the religious goings-on of the Montagues - a family who are rumoured to shelter Catholics. King James isn’t happy.

There are loads of secrets, spooky occurrences, a murder or two and plenty of suspense. It seems very historically accurate to me: it’s winter, and everything is cold, dark and difficult to live in!

This is a series I’ll be continuing with, there are another two books so far, so that should illustrate how good they are. He’s a very likeable main character, and he’s clearly being pressurised into being a spy.

This was so good! This is one of those mysteries where there is a surprise around every corner and you really don't know what's going to happen next. Even after everything Agatha did, I still felt sorry for her and could understand where she was coming from. And I was surprised that Meg was so understanding because I don't know if I would have been in that same situation. It really kept me on my toes until the very end.
