Sarah (7800 KP) rated The Snowman (Harry Hole #7) (Oslo Sequence #5) in Books
Oct 16, 2017
A very good crime thriller
Crime thrillers are very common, especially series, but I really think the Harry Hole books are better than your average crime novels.
The Norwegian setting is a nice change from your usual UK or USA set novels. Harry Hole is an intriguing and flawed protaganist, even if he is a little bit cliched. The plot of this novel itself is very interesting, although it does wander slightly into disbelief at times. This doesn't stop it from being a very good read and probably one of the better stories in the Harry Hole series that I've read so far.

Kai (5 KP) rated Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination in Books
Nov 13, 2017 (Updated Nov 13, 2017)
This isn't a very long speech, it probably would fit onto maybe 20 pages written without illustrations, but I found this really powerful. I read it on my bus to work and, being in a transition period between jobs, it has helped me to think about the fact that it is okay to make mistakes. It is okay to experience failure. I think I embrace imagination already a lot, but it is really nice to get a reminder that this is a good thing. Jo Rowling's speech was really powerful and I think everyone should read it.
Erika (17789 KP) rated Suicide Squad (2016) in Movies
Aug 24, 2017
What can I say about Suicide Squad? To be nice, the soundtrack was great and Margot Robbie did a good job with Harley. I cannot understand why the relationship between Joker and Harley is always romanticized, because it's definitely not romantic. The plot was rushed and discombobulated, and they underutilized characters. Why did they killed off Slipknot five minutes after introducing him? Why even waste the time introducing him? I personally can't stand Jared Leto as an actor, but I understood where they were going with the new Joker. But, in comparison to Heath Ledger, he was trash.
Suswatibasu (1703 KP) rated The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society in Books

Sweet tale, fluffy though some disturbing themes
I rather enjoyed this tale of back and forth letters between a journalist, her friends and the people on the island of Guernsey. It is lighthearted for the most part, though it describes the harrowing story of Elizabeth who was taken to a concentration camp during WWII and never returns. But the story centres around the main journalist who falls in love with the people and the island, and how she attempts to write an honest book about them. There's not much else to it, but it's a nice easy read.

Eerie Thriller
At last a very good suspenseful thriller in a similar mould to What lies beneath, The Number 23, Secret window. I wouldn't put this in the horror category although it has a few jumps along the way. A take on of a Korean film called A tale of two sisters. I really enjoyed this and thought it was a well made film with a good cast. It has a nice twist towards the end, although suspicious minds might make it out? Overall a very enjoyable film. If you like this type of thriller go see it soon!
Villainous Vee (53 KP) rated Alita: Battle Angel (2019) in Movies

Great SFX (2 more)
Nice set up for next film
Great action sequences
Disappointing if no follow up (2 more)
Some dodgy characters
Weak love story line
Overall I really enjoyed this film. You can tell straight away that James Cameron had a massive effect on this film, even Alitas eyes look like something straight from Avatar.
The overall story was great and intriguing and most questions I had were answers, although not all but expect a second film would answer those.
If you can I highly recommend going to see this on the big screen as the visuals are beautiful.

graveyardgremlin (7194 KP) rated Charlie All Night in Books
Feb 15, 2019
Fast, funny, absurd, and thoroughly enjoyable, Charlie All Night is a fun-filled romp filled with great characters! This is my first Jennifer Crusie book and I can't wait to read more from her, especially since I've heard her newer books are even better. While the bit of mystery isn't real strong, Ms. Crusie's flowing plot and zany characterizations are wonderful, and more than make up for it. In some ways, this book reminds me of early Janet Evanovich romances, although Jennifer Crusie's have a more timeless feel to them. A very nice, light read to curl up with. :)
Cumberland (1142 KP) rated The Cruel Prince in Books

Holly Black is amazing
This book follows the story of Jude a mortal girl who was raised in the world of the fae. Jude is a morally grey character. This makes the story more interesting because her actions are not easy to predict. It was a nice change from the typical YA hero who always does what is right. My one complaint is that the book did start off a little slow, but by the end I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series, and I hope they don't disappoint.
Ross (33 KP) rated Tremors (1990) in Movies
Mar 7, 2019
classics never die, unlike graboids
I first saw this via those discs you get when you used to first buy a DVD player, a handful of B movies and this hidden gem, this film convinced me to give B movies a second chance, Tremors is made up of a small cast of good actors, it takes place in the middle of a desert in a nowhere town, two guys going about their business until something starts killing people, what follows is B movie gold, well worth a watch.
Christina Burdzel (8 KP) rated The Haunting of Hill House- Season 1 in TV
Mar 16, 2019
Not what I expected
Haunting in Hill House, when my daughter recommended this, I admit, the first episode made me almost not wanting to watch another, but I did. And I'm so glad I did. I had both tears and a need for a nightlight while watching this. The only thing that kind of was meh, was some of the secondary actors. The main characters were a nice cast in my opinion, but their husbands and wives, eh they were ok. I really hope there's a second season.
