High expectations, slow burn.
The first 2 episodes of this series were a lot slower than some had expected, but that is pretty normal to my mind.
The series really hit its stride in the third episode onwards: we saw some epic battle scenes and some good old political intrigue and back-stabbing.

Intrigue, deception, seduction and murder are all accepted and expected ploys in this game and the players are quite expert in their manipulations. The best is yet to come, this first season is one of the best crafted political dramas in quite a long time.

[Eric Larson] does it again with [Dead Wake] by making non fiction read like fiction all the while providing a great amount of information. The research that he does before writing a book shows his deep passion fro the topics. In [Dead Wake] he informs the reader not only what is was like being on the Lusitania, but also the political intrigue that seemed to surround the voyage and it's demise.

Scenes pick up where they left off in the previous episode, and respect the audience’s ability to sustain interest. Given the intrigue, great characters and Spacey’s sublime performance, viewers won’t need gimmicks to keep them coming back for more.

Asimov's Foundation series is a classic for a reason. His ability to construct a coherent political narrative across centuries, without sounding like a dry textbook from a parallel universe, is astounding. However, Asimov's talents lie in plot and narrative - not in writing style, dialogue, or characterization. He utilizes character interactions to describe most occurring events, but these interactions are simply not believable. You find yourself rolling your eyes, cringing away, even having to close the book for a moment to rid your mind of the image of Asimov as a greasy 15-year-old in his mom's basement, trying to write about human beings without ever interacting with them.

Sorry, Isaac. I'm sure that's not true of you.

All in all, the success of this book doesn't surprise me, but it was not easy to get through.

I had a sudden craving for sci-fi/fantasy one day and stumbled across this book just days after it had been released. The lead character was a strong, boundary-defying female with her own flaws to overcome - and she was handled very well in terms of development and realistic emotion.

The writing was wonderful, I was sucked in and finished the book in less than a few days (with my busy schedule, that really is a feat!). The villains were not so easy to identify, making the tale of political intrigue that much more interesting.

If you're looking for a story of magic and a rebel heroine, then look no further. I cannot wait for the sequel!
