"I discovered this via Wendy Carlos and it was her version in A Clockwork Orange that just woke me up to that sort of music ever since. It’s just the most amazing song. This is the one perfect pop song and a brilliant piece of music. This is probably my no.1 pop song of all-time as far as I’m concerned."

The ambition and aplomb of More Life is what makes pop music a thrilling cultural institution. The instinct to draw boundaries around and across pop is understandable and healthy

Ld Donovan is the solo project from Lo-Fi-Fnk’s very own Leo Drouugee. Not too long ago, he released a lovely electro-pop tune, entitled, “Say Ooh La La”.

‘Say Ooh La La’ showcases an infectious and bittersweet pop ode which celebrates romance.

The likable tune was influenced by everything from Prince, Lana Del Rey, and Swae Lee to Ethiopian music.

The result is a sophisticated harmony which draws on a variety of influences to produce fresh, vulnerable music.

‘Say Ooh La La’ contains a relatable storyline, ear-welcoming vocals, and groovy instrumentation flavored with electro-pop and modern dance elements.

"A film soundtrack so good no film is deserving of it. I've been listening to this record for 20 years. Eno's one of the forefathers of using the studio as an instrument. He gets credit for that, but actually maybe he reduced what pop music was – produced, studio pop music into its essence, to create this ambient music. He's definitely someone who I fell in love with as I was getting into a lot of new approaches in music, all of his music I really love. Another Green World, Music For Films, Apollo - those are the ones I really took to. There is an odd parallel between this record and the Morricone record for me – because once you really get into this stuff, you think "What film would be worthy of this kind of music?". You can't really imagine it. I don't know how liberal he is about licensing his music, but I wonder if any film has dared to license this music– because that's a tall order."

"Minimalist music" has its own largely rigid definition in modern classical music (a genre that Steve Reich, Philip Glass and La Monte Young have contributed to), but Cool Hunting has highlighted how contemporary artists are taking these compositional techniques and applying them in their own music across all genres—be it ambient, pop, folk or electronic.

What do you make of these reductionist albums?

Amid all the new tricks and twists of expensive recording studios brimming with expensive gear and excessive arrangements from eager producers, these reductionist albums speak out to Cool Hunting:
