"I discovered this band by reading an article about them in the NME of all places! Sometimes they would review things that were interesting. I bought that record, and then bought all the other records. The thing I loved about Accelerator though, was that it was just so loud, but also full of these pop hooks. It reminded me a bit of There's A Riot Goin' On, being played by a rock band or something! They have big choruses and loads going on in the music and these people trying to making an original-sounding pop record. It's also about pop music as well, and television personalities and film stars. It's a strange record that's interested in the process of making records. They said that they'd made an album that was a tribute to the 60s called Thank You and then one for the 70s called Sweet 16, and then this was their tribute to the 80s. It doesn't really sound like that, but they wanted it to maybe act like a tribute to the excesses of the 80s, and it came out as this like weird, heavily compressed, raw, funk record. I liked it so much that I then got to see them live on that Accelerator tour in Brighton, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. It was really interesting watching their dynamic."

"It was the first record I ever bought with my own money. I was 12 and I chose it because of the cover: I thought David Bowie looked really cool. I loved how weird the album was: it’s a combination of avant-garde and some really great pop songs. I can listen to it endlessly and it’s still one of my favourite records. I think when I was a kid I was responding to Bowie’s androgyny but I just didn’t realise it because I was too young. There was just something about his image and the way that he presented himself that really rang true with me and I found that really exciting. I think that, for me, music is very genderless and that’s what I feel about his music specifically. When I write music it doesn’t feel like it’s restricted by any gender norms and that’s always what I look for in other artists as well."

"The Nicolas Roeg aspect of Jim O'Rourke's records is interesting, each following a Roeg title. But maybe this record is also a portal to an era of American acoustic music that Domino were licensing in the late-1990s that I would have listened to. I think maybe this is an overlooked record which sounded maybe more unique at the time - the production is so good I think it has influenced a lot of other records since then. And that great Ivor Cutler cover! It's a really great record as it combines experimentation and pop music to varying degrees. Very dark lyrics. Would I like to collaborate with Jim O'Rourke? No. In a way, I've no interest in collaborating with anyone. I'm not desperate in that sense and I enjoy being a fan of people's music. Somehow by accident or through visiting a studio socially or something, I end up working with people but I don't really crave to work with people... it could be a bit creepy

From Katy Perry to Coldplay and Miley Cyrus, 2017 has been marked by some lowlights from the biggest names in music. But that has left room open for some new voices like Cardi B and Dua Lipa to make stunning debuts on a massive scale.

Of course, some perennial favourites like Rihanna, Drake, and Carly Rae Jepsen are still churning out the quality hits as they've always done. Here are the best pop songs of 2017 so far, according to Esquire.
