Andy Garcia recommended Serpico (1973) in Movies (curated)

"Then I would have to — and it’s hard to pick just one of his — but I would go with Sidney Lumet’s Serpico. Again, a performance-driven film, but there’s a sort of a reality to Sidney Lumet’s movies. I had the great pleasure of working with him, and there’s a reality, a sort of documentary quality to his films, you know? And it’s hard to pick from the lot of his films, whether it be Network or Dog Day Afternoon or Serpico. But there’s something about Serpico that has an emotional depth to it that was very touching. And also, it’s easy to identify with someone who’s trying to fight against the system and rise above it and do well, and the price that he pays for doing that. And Al Pacino’s performance in that movie is quite extraordinary."

Aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets a mysterious man named Tommy Wiseau in his acting classes with Jean Shelton. Hoping to achieve Hollywood stardom, Sestero moves to Los Angeles and signs on to appear in his buddy's project. Financed with his own money, Wiseau writes, directs and stars in "The Room," a critically maligned movie that becomes a cult classic.

There isn't a lot to say about this one. I mainly only went to see it because some people were raving about it. This for me is skirting the fine line of "based on a true story" and reality TV. I cannot watch reality TV, I find it physically distressing watching anything that awkward. That being said, I don't feel like I was missing out on much in this film, and no one else in the cinema seemed to be enjoying it either.

On the Air. Unaware.
"On the Air. Unaware".

Peter Weir's incredibly prescient satire drama (released, as it was, even pre Big Brother), in which Jim Carrey shows he can actually act, by putting in - for me - what is probably his best performance as Truman Burbank, the unwitting and unknowing star of a 24/7 reality TV show that is now in its 30th year and that is viewed by millions around the globe.

In effect, a bit of an update on the old Descartes 'how do we know what is real?' question: as far as Truman is concerned, this *is* reality, until a series of accidents and events leads him to start to question everything and everyone in his life, leading to the emotional finale (does he ever meet the girl again? What comes next for the world's most recognizable man?).

This is my go to app. I have a lot of family around the world and when you can't travel this helps keep up with family and friends. I can see pics and videos and really feel like I can be there when in reality I'm not. I have watched people from relationships, kids grow up, and all kinds of stuff on here. Love it!!!

A Great Feel Good Movie
Although this film doesn't reflect the reality of P.T Barnum's life; it misses out some of the darker elements to this story, I think the empowering message of this film, combined with fantastic songs and magical visuals, will put a smile on your face.
