Erika Kehlet (21 KP) rated 15 Minutes (A Maizie Albright Star Detective Mystery, #1) in Books
Feb 21, 2018
Celebrity gossip fans, reality TV fans, and of course mystery fans are going to love Maizie Albright. She is determined, quirky, and lots of fun. A former child actor who played a detective on TV, Maisie returns home to Black Pine, Georgia seeking an apprenticeship with a real private investigator. Will Maisie be able to convince her unwilling mentor that shes more than a hollywood has-been? Full of humor and romance, this is a great start to a new series.

Who would have thought that a book about being on a reality TV show after being dumped on TV would be such an interesting book topic?
I love that Helly Acton dreamt up an entire Tv show around a devastating moment in life and turned it around to something positive. Having seven women in a house at a low point in their lives could have gone completely horribly, but the characters that Helly wrote gelled together so well that there wasn’t a lot of drama but you still rooted for each and every woman in The Shelf house.
I loved how she integrated social media and technology into the house with The Wall and The Tracker, and used them to show how they would be interacted with if they were included in a real reality TV show.
I didn’t want to put this book down, and didn’t know who I wanted to be evicted each time there was an eviction as I loved each one of the characters. I also liked how at the end of the book, everyone’s happiness wasn’t measured by whether they were in a relationship or not, it was whether they had met their goals. And I also love that the theme throughout this book wasn’t that you need to be in a relationship to be happy, but that you need to love yourself first to be happy and don’t rush into being with someone who ultimately isn’t right for you just because you think that you’re running out of time.
I can’t wait to read Helly’s next book now.

David McK (3207 KP) rated The Truman Show (1998) in Movies

On the Air. Unaware.
"On the Air. Unaware".
Peter Weir's incredibly prescient satire drama (released, as it was, even pre Big Brother), in which Jim Carrey shows he can actually act, by putting in - for me - what is probably his best performance as Truman Burbank, the unwitting and unknowing star of a 24/7 reality TV show that is now in its 30th year and that is viewed by millions around the globe.
In effect, a bit of an update on the old Descartes 'how do we know what is real?' question: as far as Truman is concerned, this *is* reality, until a series of accidents and events leads him to start to question everything and everyone in his life, leading to the emotional finale (does he ever meet the girl again? What comes next for the world's most recognizable man?).

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2082 KP) rated The Homicide Hustle: A Ballroom Dance Mystery in Books
Mar 9, 2018
The reality TV competition Ballroom with the B-Listers has hit DC, and Graysin Motion is one of the featured studios. But when one of the show's producers dies, Stacy begins digging around to find the killer. The characters and plot are a little light even for a cozy, but the story comes together well at the end. Anyone with an interest in ballroom dance will certainly enjoy it.

Dean (6921 KP) rated Let's Be Evil (2016) in Movies

Very weak story (1 more)
Not much of a horror or scifi
Let's not bother
Well only tried this out as recognised the actress who plays Tiggs was popular on UK TV. It's a very low budget film. Set in an advanced facility with advanced Ai and augmented reality specs. It's all a bit vague as to why the kids are there, what they are learning. Very quickly turns into people just running down dark corridors, air vents trying to escape the evil kids. A poor ending which was quite predictable caps it off.

Mix of genre's
Original Horror reality gameshow
A very short 5 part Horror themed game show. 11 contestants spend 5 days at camp pleasant, which is more like Crystal Lake. They must complete various tasks to win money. What they don't win goes to the Killer fund. They can also compete to win clues to the killers identity and immunity from meeting a grisly end. Will they figure who the Killer is amongst them and win the money?
An original gameshow from the same people behind @Release the Hounds it also feels a bit like an old show called The Mole mixed with Big Brother. In between camp competitions can the contestants work out together who the Killer is? Some of the games are a bit silly and I'm not a fan of Big Brother style reality shows on the whole. However the aim of trying to guess who the Killer is and if they can remain undetected while the others try to figure it out is intriguing. So one for Whodunit fans, who don't remind a slight reality TV angle will enjoy this.

Still great 20 years later
Full review here:
20 years on, this movie still holds up and remains just as joyous a watch as it ever was. For me, this is up there with the best performance than Jim Carrey has given. He finds a nice balance here between the over the top comedy he is known for and a more nuanced one. As for the plot itself, it's even more sinister in the days of reality TV and while I don't think things would ever get this far- it's a cautionary tale of what could be.

Dancing On Ice is a spectacular
When Dancing on Ice opens with THE Frenchie from THE Grease wearing THE pink ladies jacket the stage is complete and it is a winner.
Torvill & Dean are timelessly and effortlessly amazing on ice, they are legends.
The hosts of Holly & Phillip are smug and self satisfied and their faces make me want to claw my eyes out.
James Jordan is a Strictly Come Dancing professional and he’s competing on a dancing on ice show, a reality tv show is not complete without a ringer.
