KittyMiku (138 KP) rated Goodreads: Book Reviews in Apps
Mar 21, 2019
I love Goodreads since it allows me to track my goals, see who is reading what and what I read. I also enjoy being able to see if I liked a book or not. Nothing like deciding to reread a book only to remember that you hated it. I fully enjoy how easy this app is and how useful it can be when making a list of must reads. Knowing what I want to read, what I feel I need to read and what I have already read, has helped me keep on track with my annual goal of reading 100 books

A good low budget surprise
I stumbled across this on Sky cinema the other night. Never heard of it before but saw good reviews for it, so tried it out. It's quite a simple film in terms of plot. Some kids go looking down a cave for a missing professor. Things go from bad to worse once they are down there. If you like sci-fi films about time travel or the like you will like this quite a bit. The budget is low and the acting isn't great but the ideas in the film make up for it. Worth checking out if you are stuck with what to watch.

AOB BOARDGAME REVIEW: THROUGH THE AGES
Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is a bear of a game – and I love it. It’s the game that I wish I had as a teenager to play with my older brothers instead of our weekend long Risk or Axis and Allies binges (Those weekends may have had something to do with why I feel this way about dice now).
If you are a filler game type of person, or someone who doesn’t like to get too deep into games, I want to be honest with you – Through the Ages is probably not for you.

Cyn Armistead (14 KP) rated The Nymphos of Rocky Flats (Felix Gomez, #1) in Books

I read several rave reviews about Acevedo's work, so I gave this book a try. One thing in its favor is that it is NOT a romance! Yay!
On the other hand, Felix Gomez is just a little too annoyingly prickly for me to give a damn about him. And the plot? Let's just say that as soon as I learned what "EBE" stood for, any chance of liking the book was gone. Too many clichés! Certain plot points were never adequately explained, leaving holes big enough to drive a semi through without scraping the sides.
I'm taking the other books off my to-read shelf. Life is too short to read boring novels.

Clare Parrott (294 KP) rated Her Stepbrothers Demands (Stepbrothers, #5) in Books

For an author that's written quite a few books now I'm surprised how badly it's written. No depth in characters and the story is all over the place and flits from one thing to the next, I even had trouble deciding which character was talking in some parts. Some characters just seem to waft into the scene and then are straight back out which seems pointless and doesn't really add to the story.
The cover and the description looked promising but fell flat quite quickly, Very disappointing and after looking at reviews for Trinity's other books it seems to be a common complaint with her writing and so it's unlikely that I will read anymore from this author.

Absolutely awful
I've just left the cinema having seen the highly anticipated movie Hereditary and I'm in shock. Not because it's scary, or unsettling, or any of the other things that so many glowing reviews have mentioned. No, I'm in shock because I don't think I've ever been in a cinema where so many people have walked out throughout the movie from boredom. Where so many people have laughed uncontrollably at scenes which are supposed to be serious and shocking, but are just plain ridiculous. And where so many people have all left the cinema commenting on how shit it was, and what a waste of two hours it was. This was just a complete and utter disappointment.
Great potential (3 more)
Friendly user base
lots of varieties of things to review

Needs a few more reviewers.
Addictive
Smashbomb is the only reviewing app I look forward to using. I could spend hours on it, which is why I have to limit the time I spend on here. It has so many things, I have used peoples reviews here to help me pick the next board game/ book I will read. It helps me be more analytical on what makes something good by asking me to supply good and bad points to everything. I can't wait to see how it grows

Dean (6927 KP) rated X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) in Movies

This won't be rising from the ashes
I was quite excited about this X-Men film as I thought the last film was the end of the current class. Then I heard about the bad reviews and can understand why.
It's the weakest of the 4 "first class" X-Men films. The first 2 films were really good and among my favourites of all the X-Men films.
This wasn't as good as Last stand for me which also has Jean turn bad.
Saved by some good actors and some good action scenes as they battle each other. Overall it's nearer the bottom of the class of all the X-Men films that have been made.

A heartwarming read
Whilst this is definitely a very well written and heartening read, I'm surprised at some of the reviews mentioning the unpredictability of the twists and turns. For me the downside to this book was that it was very predictable. This isn't unsurprising as it is a drama/romance, and I've read a lot of books so nothing surprises me anymore. But this didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book too much. It was still a heart warming tale with a well developed and relatable main character, with a truly sad and interesting story. There's a lot of important and poignant messages this book raises, and it makes for a very thought provoking read.
