Kristin (149 KP) rated Broken Aro (The Broken Ones, #1) in Books
Dec 7, 2018
Disclaimer: I received an e-copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Arowyn (Aro) is the only sister of 7 brothers, all soldiers, who's only thought is to get her out of their town and to safety when a neighboring army attacks. However, things go awry, and Aro finds herself separated from her brothers, on a slave ship, trying to convince those around her she's a boy as her brothers instructed. Along the way, she meets a Fey, a Dragos, and other interesting creatures she'd only heard stories about.
I really enjoyed this book, as it has a great pace and interesting characters. There were quite a few times where I caught myself skimming ahead just to see what was coming up. The mythological parts are great, and I like how everything works together to create a wonderful story. I'll say, the last quarter of the book had me gasping, as I'd never even suspected anything of the sort, and I definitely can't wait to read more of this series. Great start!

What a unique story and nothing like anything I've read before. You are thrown into the middle of a terrorist attack at the beginning of the story and not knowing whether she is going to survive or not, Cara confides her deepest secrets to the young lady who plucked her to safety. Secrets that should have stayed hidden as they are now used against her.
The writing style is easy to read and flows really well with each chapter written from the perspectives of the 2 main characters - Cara and Amy - which works extremely well for this book and the story. I did feel there was a bit of a lull in the middle but it certainly makes up for it as we move towards the thrilling conclusion.
Never having read anything by these authors before (Paul Perry and Karen Gillece ), I will most certainly keep my eyes open in future and thank you to the Publisher, Penguin UK - Michael Joseph, and NetGalley for once again introducing me to yet another great book that would likely have passed me by.

I had friends that 'couldn't get into it', but it's the kind of film that's not everyone's taste
So good. So. So. So good.
Went into this not knowing a thing about it. Except, I assumed, there would be some driving involved. Just the poster alone made me think I'd like it, and I did.
It's just such a fun experience. The story isn't overly serious or convoluted, yet Baby's obsession over music and, the reasoning for it, add depth to him that really make the character a touch more loveable.
Action scenes aren't boring Michael Bay-esque. There is an element of fear for the characters safety, but more-so intrigue and respect at how those shots were created.
Without spoiling anything; I enjoyed the ending. It was a touch unrealistic, but the entire film dips its toe in that realm.
I left feeling satisfied, happy, and most of all, entertained. That's what it is all about!

Recently divorced Jasmine feels like she has failed everyone; her husband, her kids, and herself. Her ex-husband left her for a younger model, her daughter blames her for the divorce & won’t speak to her, and her son broke his leg as a call for attention.
While making a new friend, a mistake made at a women’s shelter leaves Jasmine in danger and doubting her safety. She seeks the help and guidance of her bible study group the Planted. As she finds a new job and perspective in life, Jasmine is brought closer to God and those she loves.
This is the fifth book in the Christian suspense series, Planted Flowers. As with the other books in the Planted series, this is more than just a book of mystery and romance. The underlining story has to do with finding faith, strength, understanding, and support while gaining a deeper relationship with God and his teachings.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Radical revolutionary
This book is a manifesto of sorts that challenges you to challenge yourself and the things around you. To deliberately seek meaning in all you do and live your life in ways that bring joy and make the world a richer place because if it.
Crimethinc take you away from the false idea of anarchy if safety pins and riots and show it as an intellectual intelligent philosophy in being a more positive human being. It changed the way I think and live and I hope I've managed to bring others more happiness because of it. And after all, like the books says, is there anything more anarchic and radical than falling in love? It goes against all conventions of reality and is irrational and yet something we live for.
My only criticism is Crimethinc's ideas often act on the fringe of an existing society instead of bringing everyone with us.

Zombietastic!
After hearing good things about this zombie show on Netflix I finally caught up with it.
Definitely worth putting to the top of your list. This is how a zombie series should be done. We join the start of an outbreak with a small town evacuation and join a handful of survivors trying to get to safety. What I really liked is that the episodes just follow the chaos as it unfolds. You could imagine the situations happening in this type of event. The episodes vary from around 25 - 40 minutes in length. Some are just about 1 guy trying to avoid a zombie. Another episode shows the distrust in others when things go bad. So there is great variation overall in the settings and situations that arise. It's a little low budget, more evident in some episodes. However it doesn't need big budget effects and it has a raw gritty feel which adds to the intensity. A must for Zombie and Horror fans. Season 2 is coming this year.

Crawl is the tale of a father and Daughter who find themselves trapped in a rapidly flooding cellar/crawl space during a hurricane in Florida, their escape is hindered by an increasing number of man eating alligators. There’s not much else to add, plot wise. Crawl is mainly a two and a half cast driven film (two humans and one yappy dog) as Haley and Dave attempt to escape the cellar and get to safety. We do see other characters but usually from a distance and only for short periods of time.
Crawl is a classic creature feature and really works, the small cast helps portray the looming danger and the combination of the alligators and rising flood waters make the threat very believable and the yappy dog is used to enhance the tension as you find yourself waiting for it to be eaten.
And that’s it, Crawl has a simple premise, a simple story and is an hour and half of tension, jump scares, people being eaten and, oh yes one yappy dog.
