Honest Review for Free Copy of Book
The Core Fulcrum by Prashanti Talluri has multiple details that made me think it was largely inspired by Harry Potter. The school has rooms that move daily which were a big reminder of Harry Potter but there were multiple little things as well.
Snowball and Goldie are two kittens that have just started the fifth grade. Like the school's humans are used to there are classes that everyone has to take an optional class. It is one of these optional classes that Snowball, Goldie, and some of their friends choose that sends them on an amazing and scary adventure. They all choose to take part in the class called “Curiosity Kills the Cat”, but so does their class bully Hisky.
In this class, after passing a test they learn of the Core Fulcrum. They learn that the Core Fulcrum is a powerful artifact that is responsible for all the cat’s extraordinary abilities. The problem is that the Core Fulcrum is missing and that could cause major issues for all cats unless it is found soon. Their solution is to enlist the help of kittens in school to join the dangerous search for this all-important item. Can they find it before it it's too late and the rats figure out how to use it?
I like how it acknowledges how cats essentially got their independence from humans (although I can’t help but wonder what happened to the people). It was also interesting how the casts and rats have created separate kingdoms from each other and even seem to war with each other to some extent. Honestly things like the snakes that bite their tails to function as seat belts just seemed a bit farfetched, along with busses that seem to be living animals at the same time (or maybe just created to mimic animal abilities, I am not sure). Then there was how the cats were in harnesses to practice for their version of the Olympics yet they were going through tunnels without getting tangled and finishing in around fifteen seconds seemed unrealistic even for cats.
This is a children's book all the way. I don’t think may people past middle school would be all that interested in it or find it very enjoyable. It may even be questionable for some middle school readers. It all depends on how well a reader can accept the strangeness of this book. I rate this book 2 out of 4. This is because the base story is good but the details just felt awkward. I just don’t think anyone but younger readers are going to be into it. I could be wrong though.

Finally!
So I just finished Serpentine in the Anita Blake series. I borrowed it from the library because, well, the series has gone down in quality. In this one, Anita is back to kicking ass and taking names! All of my favorite characters are back (Edward, Olaf, Nicky) and happily, Richard and his baggage are nowhere to be found. Anita's let go of alot of her own so she didn't push and moan her way through this one. Finally.
In Serpentine, Anita and her fiances are in Florida for Edward and Donna's wedding, where Micah has also been in contact with a new group of "Weres" whose body parts become actual snakes. Of course, despite promising to use this time as a threesome vacation, the Four Horsemen have to solve a murder and a kidnapping, deal with a new flavor of psychic, a wedding party that is completely crazy, and keep her relationship going. There is some sex (which honestly makes me happy), but it's not the focus of the story. This book reminds readers that Anita has always been a badass with badass friends, and they start doing what they do best. Even Donna shows some fire, though it quickly goes out again. Still, Anita hardly does any magic or psychic stuff compared to the other books and manages to come out swinging. Hamilton seems to have gotten the memo about the series, because this book finally focused on the action outside of the bedroom.

This is the first book of two that details the changing life of Atty (Atancia). She is dealing with panic attacks, possibly brought on by the trauma of seeing a young boy die in front of her. Apart from that, her life is safe and normal. However, that all changes when she goes to a New Year's Eve party and meets Ben. Before you (or she) knows it, her life has changed drastically and not in all ways good. Her beloved nana has died and Atty feels personally responsible. Ben is her knight in shining armour and helps to ease things. Before long, Atty has left the States for Australia, needing some space to get closure whilst she figures out just who she is and what she wants to do with her life.
I won't go into any more details as I dislike giving spoilers but I will say that this book has a fresh take on the whole 'vampire' story which makes it a refreshing and intriguing read. There are lots of amazing characters in here that you will like or dislike, depending on the part they play. Perhaps, it's my twisted mind, but I will admit to looking for 'snakes in the grass' throughout this story. Did I find them? That's for me to know and for you to find out when you read the book!
A brilliant book to start the duology with. Totally recommended.

I won't go into any more details as I dislike giving spoilers but I will say that this book has a fresh take on the whole 'vampire' story which makes it a refreshing and intriguing read. There are lots of amazing characters in here that you will like or dislike, depending on the part they play. Perhaps, it's my twisted mind, but I will admit to looking for 'snakes in the grass' throughout this story. Did I find them? That's for me to know and for you to find out when you read the book!
A brilliant book to start the duology with. Totally recommended.

When a pair of astronauts set foot on the moon having not been back in over five decades they get a nasty surprise in the shape of a Nazi soldier.
If you thought the premise of Snakes on a Plane was nuts then this is surely right up there for insanity, the film has it’s moments but doesn’t have any A-listers big enough to pull in an audience.
After discovering that the Nazi’s have won the space race (we’re never enlightened as to how they come to arrive there) and set up a huge base on the dark side of the moon, it’s up to a lone astronaut (Kirby) to stop a potential invasion of Earth.
The base is like something out of a cartoon and is in the shape of a huge Swastika which gives you some indication about just how insane this film is? Couple that with big hats and large trousers, along with turning a black man white and you’ll see what you’ve let yourself in for.
The battling US President is a Sarah Palin wanna be, (in all honesty they might as well have got the real one) complete with a gung-ho approach and deer heads on the wall of the Oval office.
It doesn’t get much better, but ironically there is enough to keep you interested. Oddly the visuals featuring battling ships in space is quite effective.
This is one film that you’ll probably watch just for the title of it, when it’s finished you’ll wonder why the hell you ever put it on in the first place?
