Dean (6926 KP) rated Scream Queens - Season 1 in TV
Jun 25, 2017
Great cast (4 more)
Good cameos
Cool killer outfit
Surprisingly gory
Funny at times
Will make you Scream.... For one reason or another!
A gave this a whirl as the cast was impressive and a fan of Slasher films. This is a very bizarre series definitely more at the comedy side than horror. Featuring true Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Roberts of @Scream 4. Almost like a spoof at times. Try thinking of a mix of Clueless, Mean Girls, Scream and Scary Movie. The spoilt rich kid humour won't be for all but the Killer wouldn't look out of place in a real Slasher film and there are a variety of ways he bumps off the brats.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Sleeper (1973) in Movies
Mar 11, 2018 (Updated Mar 11, 2018)
One of the best of Woody Allen's early pure comedies. Allen (basically playing the same character as always) wakes up in 2173 and is recruited by rebels seeking to bring down an oppressive totalitarian regime.
Simply a very funny film; a much more visual comedy than you would expect from Allen - I have seen suggestions that the whole thing is intended as a homage to Benny Hill - but there are the usual one-liners (also a few slightly dodgy stereotype-based jokes). Very much a spoof of late 60s/early 70s SF movies like THX-1138 and 2001; the SF content is surprisingly solid courtesy of uncredited script consultancy from Isaac Asimov (this may well be the first SF movie to deal with the concept of cloning). Worth watching just for the sequence with the banana and the chicken.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Holmes and Watson (2018) in Movies
Jan 3, 2019 (Updated Jan 3, 2019)
Almost incomprehensibly bad comic spoof of Sherlock Holmes that - despite the presence of many talented and genuinely funny performers - still manages to be totally lacking in laughs, wit, or anything much in the way of entertainment value. Serious adaptations of the original stories - hell, the original stories themselves - all managed to be much funnier than this.
General tone of self-satisfied knowing stupidity; lazy jokes about Donald Trump, selfies, people texting dick pics, etc; much-too-late-to-the-party spoofing of the Guy Ritchie Holmes films from nearly ten years ago. I'll go and see just about anything but it took a sustained effort of will not to walk out of this film. 2018 may have departed but this film lingers on in its wake like the stench from rotting carrion. For pity's sake, avoid.

Awix (3310 KP) rated The Court Jester (1956) in Movies
Apr 20, 2020
Lavish musical-comedy spoof. Humble carnival entertainer Hubert Hawkins (Kaye) infiltrates the court of evil king Roderick as his new jester, in an attempt to get the rightful heir back on the throne, little suspecting that the man he's impersonating is the deadliest assassin in Europe.
Feels very dated now, and it's spoofing a genre of films which is even more old-fashioned (e.g. the 1938 Errol Flynn Robin Hood). How you feel about Danny Kaye's clowning, cross-talk routines and patter songs will also affect your response to this movie. Still, you have to admire Kaye's sheer dexterity as a performer, and there is still a touch of genius about routines like the chalice from the palace and the flagon with the dragon. He's well-supported too. Technicolour vaudeville in the end, but still very funny in places.

Phil Leader (619 KP) rated The Captain Disaster Collection in Books
Nov 11, 2019
Captain Disaster is the hapless hero of a series of computer games by the author and his (mis)adventures are ripe for some rib tickling short stories.
This book is a collection of these tales, with only the most tenuous connection between them. The author is clearly heavily influenced by Douglas Adams, but although Seaman doesn't match Adams in terms of with his writing or humour, that is not a criticism as he was unique. Instead Captain Disaster has his own voice - aspiring to Adams certainly but with a good mix of silly jokes, slapstick and toilet humour.
Not everything flies but enough works that this is a fun and entertaining read. This is only supposed to be a very lighthearted, knock-about science fiction spoof after all. If you need a smile putting on your face, as well as a few groans being elicited, this is just what you need.
