A disappointing continuation of the series
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, which I've been reading as part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription, even if certain elements felt a little predictable.

The second book didn't have quite the same level of excitement and tension as the first, but was still enough to hook a reader and kept with "The Haunted" theme of the series.

With this third book, any "haunting" element has really been pushed into the background and I don't feel that the story is quite as compelling in this latest installment. I also read some reviews of the second book after I finished it, and one in particular mentioned the lack of variety in the swearing - and now that I'm aware of it, it REALLY started to bother me.

I know I'm going to go ahead and read the next book in the series, at least. Hopefully this will be return to the more exiting themes of the earlier books

If Irvine Welsh wrote Oor Wullie
Highland Laddie sees Hughie leave The Boys and head home to his Maw and Paw for some peace and quiet. He soon finds that his home town has barely changed and the nostalgia wears off quite quickly.
It turns out Hughie was something of an amateur detective in his youth, and stopped a minor smuggling ring. He starts to uncover something again in this story, while also being unknowingly mentored over his troubles by a mysterious gentleman.
This story is hilarious, and like a cross between an Irvine Welsh/Chris Brookmyre book and an issue of Oor Wullie/The Beano. The old Scots angle (wee dugs, mince and tatties, everything being braw), combined with more modern Scottish ideas (inventive swearing and heroin) makes for a laugh-out-loud tale. We also see Hughie start to come to terms with the revelation from the previous volume, and consider rejoining The Boys.

Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for providing me with an advance copy

I had such high hopes for this book but unfortunately, I just didn't love it! I think it was tailored towards a younger audience as the writing style seemed a little on the younger side although there was frequent swearing and references to slightly older themes it seemed that the authors didn't really know their demographic. I can usually never guess what's going to happen in a mystery book but I predicted almost every single thing that happened fairly early on. I also just didn't care much for either of the main characters (or the side characters). I'm such a fan of Zoe and thought this series sounded so promising but I don't know if I would be in a rush to continue it! My copy had some printing errors too but I was able to figure out what was going on with that pretty quickly and it didn't affect my experience too much.

There are so many great things in this podcast, I sat down to listen to 10 minutes and ended up binging a few episodes by accident. There's fantastic humour, a selection of popular and obscure horror films, skits that will make you chuckle and a super bonus occasionally of cat content... oooh, plus a feature called Pets In Peril which is something I didn't even know I needed!

Apart from all that... the host's voice sounds like it has been pulled out of a classic horror film, or perhaps from narrating The Twilight Zone, it's glorious and I have never heard such beautiful swearing.

Possibly the most impressive thing is the production, this is a gold standard for podcasting as far as I'm concerned. I don't think I've heard such a fantastically crafted piece of audio. All of those things above were wonderful on their own, but add in sound effects and music and well... it's spooky season, go and check it out yourself and see why I love it so much.
