Normal People has been lauded by so many people for quite a while now, so when the TV series came out, I thought I’d better get the book down off my shelf and actually read it. I’m shockingly bad at watching TV, so I knew this was the only way I’d be able to keep up with everyone talking about it.

I’d had a bit of a love/ hate relationship with Conversations with Friends, but this was all love. A girl who doesn’t belong, has no friends, has a relationship with one of the popular boys - but no one knows. It’s a secret. Marianne seems so damaged by her family, and I really felt sorry for her. Connell lives with his mother - it has always been just the two of them. He seems quite happy with the arrangement with Marianne. In that typical way of teenagers, where they seem oblivious to the feelings of others and their reputation is everything, Connell makes it clear that his and Marianne’s arrangement is not to be made common knowledge.

Marianne reinvents herself at university, and when she meets Connell there again, it appears that their roles have been reversed.

This was a fascinating read, and captures so well the uncertainty of youth. These characters were finding their place in the world, and they really struggle. I honestly could have read on. It’s obvious that Marianne and Connell are made for one another - and I really did like how the book ended.

I say this about a lot of authors (which is why my house is heaving with books!), and hell, I’ll say it again: I can’t wait to see what Sally Rooney comes up with next.

I really enjoyed this book and was just what I needed. I wanted a feel good book and this was definitely one of these. It made me smile, chuckle and get frustrated at the bad timing. I was frustrated but in a good way.
I read a lot of crime so love reading a heart warming book every now and again.
I got straight into the book and was hooked. I couldn't put this down.
There was one thing about the book that I didn't like and I realised this happens in other books by this author. The writer doesn't put a space into a new paragraph in some sections. For example: Alec and Paige are eating a meal and having a conversation. The meal has just arrived. She asks him if he is staying at the hotel and I realised after a few lines that they had finished eating and were back at the hotel but this wasn't clear as there was no break. There was just a new line but it looked like they were still talking. This happened a few times and did make it confusing when you realised it was at a different time or day.
As previously mentioned the story was so heart warming but both frustrating. Paige is hilarious and you cannot imagine someone having such bad luck. I felt embarrassed for her like a friend would.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good romance book with a bit on comedy. This gives it a really feel and relatable aspect to the book.
Despite the writing style, no clear paragraphs when the time has moved, I would purchase other books by this author.

Left Me with Mixed Reactions

When Conor Knighton’s fiancée left him, he wasn’t sure quite what to do until he saw a promotion talking about the National Park’s 100th anniversary. Soon, he was making plans to visit all of the official National Parks in 2016, reporting on some of them for CBS Sunday Morning. After experiencing sunrise on New Year’s Day in Acadia, he crisscrossed the country numerous times in his quest to experience all of them.

When I first heard about this book, I was intrigued. I’ve long wanted to visit all of the parks myself, not that I’ve done much more than think about it. When this book focuses on the parks and some of their history, it is fascinating. The writing is excellent, and it is easy to feel you are right next to him as he experiences the parks. However, at times he gets distracted trying to push an agenda on us, and when that happens, the parks get shafted. A few of the parks he barely describes, focusing instead on the bad he feels needs to be fixed or pointing out the bad in the past that has been fixed. Even when I agreed with his point, I found this frustrating because it’s not what I wanted to read about when I picked up the book. He definitely made me want to visit several of the parks as soon as I can. His brief stories about his life and his stories about the people he met along the way were fun and fascinating. There are two inserts of pictures from his journey; I would have loved more, but I enjoyed what we got. I wish the book had focused more on the parks themselves. Then it would have been fantastic.
