Despite being the second in the series, you don’t need to read the first to enjoy this novel.

Overall, the novel wasn’t terrible. I am not a fan of insta-lust nor people contradicting their morals with their actions. While there was chemistry between the leads, the insta-lust factor put me off. The erotic scenes were also a bit tame for my tastes. Filled with innuendos instead of being straightforward, I feel the erotic scenes would be more suited for someone who is put off but more vulgar language.

I also wasn’t a fan of the author’s writing style in general. Some part seems too long, dragging out unnecessarily or was just too flowery.

Bottom line, this is a historical romance meant for those who want a tamer historical romance. Honestly, it reminds of the novels that my grandma used to read, like Kathleen Woodiwiss and older Jude Deveraux.

Similar to many feminist experiences
Jessica Valenti is usually very articulate and analytical in her columns, which is why her memoir feels a shade different from her usual style.

I understand that the premise is to show how sexism doesn't happen in a vacuum and that an accumulation eventually wears down a person thus accepting their situation and even relenting to further abuse. Which is why by the half way point, Valenti herself seems bored of having to replay every terrible sexual incident, and the events become repetitive to the point of desensitization.

As a person, it's horrifying to go through it, as a reader - especially a female one - it does feel like I do not need hear about the details to understand it's happening. Perhaps writing this memoir is a cathartic experience for Valenti, we'll never know. It is sad, especially when she gives up on being herself and caters to everyone else, but that is something a lot of feminist memoirs reveal.

Entertainingly bad
Let's face it, you know a film with Gerard Butler in it is never going to be good. But at least with Gods of Egypt it's that bad it's vaguely entertaining.

It's take on Egyptian mythology is actually an interesting one and it's just a shame they decided to take some of it too far with over the top and pretty naff CGI. Gerard Butler hams it up and it's quite funny to listen to his accent constantly switching between English, Scottish and American. Nicolaj Coster-Waldau is a good actor but he's given absolutely nothing to work with here other than a terrible cheesy and stilted script. Brenton Thwaites isn't too bad either but he does seem to be playing a very similar character to that of the latest Pirates film.

This is one of those films you watch just to laugh at how bad it is. And fortunately for this, I've seen worse!

Beyond stupid
Considering this was a straight to dvd/Sky film, I hadn't been expecting much and sadly it delivered even less than that.

I understand why this film has been made as escape rooms are huge at the moment, but this is such a poor attempt at a horror film. It's not scary, and there's no real suspense or nothing to make you care about the characters. There are so many ways they couldve done a horror escape room, and they picked the lamest storyline available. Put that together with a bad script and terrible acting and it makes for a tedious 90 minute watch. It's not even entertainingly bad, it's just awful.

All I can say is that for anyone watching this, please don't let it put you off doing a real escape room. Real escape rooms are really fun and entertaining and pretty challenging, and not in the slightest bit boring like this sorry excuse for a film.

All style, no substance
It's a shame that Luc Besson has resorted to this. Considering his previous films, this should have been so much better.

The opening title scene starts off fairly well, it's just a shame that it then goes badly downhill with the introduction of Valerian and Laureline. The script is terrible and very cringeworthy, and it isn't helped by the lack of real chemistry between Dane DeHaan and Cara Delavigne. The plot is very weak and really drags out its 2+ hour run time, and it's very predictable. I have no idea as to why they felt the need to include Ethan Hawke and Rihanna, as their part of the plot was filler at best and could've easily been removed with little effect to the overall outcome. The visual effects are fantastic, it's just a shame they've concentrated on this instead of sorting out the horrendous script and weak plot.

I agree, room for improvement but quite charming and to be fair it is an amalgamation of multiple comics from beesons child hood. Multiple plots mashed together. It's his own re-imagining. I actually like it more and more each time I watch it, except for Clive Owen. He always stayed annoying.

As an avid fan of fith element and tank girl this movie is fab. Not to everyone's taste. But love the variety of aliens and the effects are good. Story definitely could be better and the script was very poor inplaces, over all though an enjoyable movie

Racer and the Jailbird (2017)

Very much game-of-two-halves coming together of French and Belgian talent. Charismatic gangster begins passionate affair with beautiful young racing driver, but can their love survive the stress placed on it by his career choices? Starts off looking like a slick and very commercial thriller with more than a splash of romance; second half turns into a rather glum, somewhat preposterous drama about how love can be the worst prison of all - either of these films would have been okay, but together it's two great tastes that just don't mix.

Still, fine acting from the two leads, and the first half is really, really good - does that make the way the film falls over as it gets closer to the end more or less of a disappointment? Not sure. The first half on its own would rate about an 8, the second probably a 5; probably still worth watching, though. (Racer and the Jailbird is a terrible choice of title, by the way.)

The internet's bloody mary
This was a terrible movie

Bloody mary meets unfriended? It feels like a typical supernatural slasher you have seen plenty of times.

None of the characters are likeable, if anything they are actually annoying right from the first start especially the main girl. Again there is no logic, it's not creepy or gory and I found it just boring.
Don't get me wrong I love urban legends when it is done right.

The killer was not designed well, not shown enough and not creepy enough. Only a few deaths that were not scary or gory.

I couldn't wait for this movie to end but I'm happy I watched it so that you don't have to. It was paced horribly and even a good twist at the end couldn't save this movie.

The beautifully stark poetical prose (2 more)
The spectrum of emotion through which the reader follows the author
A plot that could go in any direction
Brutally honest
There is a wealth of literature about drug addiction, alcoholism and recovery out there. Most of it seems contrived and tries much too hard to preach to the reader about the awfulness of addiction and the
redemptive process of recovery. I find most of these hard to stomach. There is nothing contrived about this work. It tells it as it is. The author is neither trying to shock nor preach. This autobiographical novel is written in a stark prose which allows the horrors and joys of the story to speak for themselves. The comedy is deepest black as is the despair. The story is filled with wonderful and terrible characters and events. I wanted to read it straight through but had to stop to rest and sleep.

Nothing new
The problem with zombie films now is that the whole zombie genre has been done to death (ha). There's far too many zombie films out there and sadly Cargo doesn't add anything new.

Whilst it has a slightly different take on the transformation into a zombie and this is done very well, this is just another apocalyptic zombie film, but this time it's set in Australia. The plot is okay but suffers from the main character doing a number of unexplainable and explicable things - he's got very limited time left, yet seems to thing it's fine to dawdle, faff and sit around doing nothing. Its a shame as Martin Freeman puts in a fantastic performance, he just doesn't have the unique plot to back it up.

I really wish they'd stop making zombie films now. This isn't a terrible film by far, it's just an entirely unnecessary addition to the genre.

The most popular terrible game since monopoly
This is a game where you stab your friends in the back as you play king of the hill essentially. people gang up on the leader, and the game only ends when someone take a substantial lead.... which means the game can and does go on, and on, and on, and on, and on, until people get frustrated and don't want to play any more and give up and let someone win.... kinda like monopoly.... If you like these games, go out and get one of the 15,000 expansion and themed versions.... if you like boardgames to be strategic and have challenging choices and interesting mechanics, look elsewhere. I've played this game 4 times over 10 years, and each one reminded me why I didn't play it for so long between.... I will not be tricked again. I veto this on game nights.....
