Tokyo Ghoul book 1 was nothing like I was expecting it to be. I enjoyed it, though! Book 1 focuses on how Kaneki became a ghoul, and how he is dealing with it (not well!!). He meets ghouls along the way, both good and bad that begin to shape his new existence.

"We are deep into Shohei Imamura. I always loved Vengeance Is Mine, which was the only one I knew, on a double-disc Criterion laser. But now this box set gives me some perspective. Pigs and Battleships. The war didn’t exactly work wonders for the people of Tokyo or wherever that was."

"The narrator of this novel works at a Tokyo convenience store and loves the routine of the job; she is also something of an anthropologist, noting her observations of human behavior in a distant and yet utterly open way. Watching her try to participate in the world is both moving and unsettling."

I'm so glad I'm not a ghoul! In book 4 of Tokyo Ghoul, Kaneki is introduced to several new ghouls. Some are very interested in him since he's half-human, half-ghoul. He makes a new friend, and is invited to a very private members-only restaurant that will change his outlook on life.
