Hazel (2934 KP) rated Good Cop Bad Cop in Books
Nov 7, 2021
Simon Kernick never disappoints and here we have yet another nail-biting, tense and enthralling thriller from one of my favourite authors.
Just what did happen on that fateful day 14 years ago and what part did DC Chris Sketty have in it? Is he the hero everyone thinks he is or is he the ultimate betrayer?
Written in flashbacks and in the present, this book goes behind the headlines into the murky world of cops investigating cops, gangs and terrorism and what really happened on that fateful day BUT who can you trust? Is Sketty spinning a yarn or is he just dreadfully unlucky?
With a great plot, fast paced and great characters, although not many are particularly likeable, this is a book that I devoured in quick time such was the pull of the story and my need to find out just what the heck happened and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest.
From start to finish, this is a winner for me and I must thank Headline via NetGalley for my advance copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.

Merissa (12038 KP) rated Drusus (Fueled By Lust #1) in Books
Apr 6, 2023 (Updated Apr 10, 2023)
Who knew that Sci-Fi could be so sexy! If you have any doubts then read the Fueled by Lust series. I've only just read Drusus but am moving on to Severus immediately as I fell in love with their world - both the human one and the one through the vortex. Lina is a curvaceous, witty 'human' who has accepted her body and loves it the way it is (makes a refreshing change!) whilst Drusus is just H-O-T! We're talking sex on a stick here. I wouldn't mind being swept away by him.
The wit is sharp, the sex is hot and the romance is sweet. Yes, it does all move fast - Lina admits that herself. However, with the help of a special fang necklace (trust me, it works!) they know that they are right for each other.
A sassy, sexy, hot read - perfect for those summer evenings. Definitely recommended.

Merissa (12038 KP) rated Anathema (Cloud Prophet Trilogy #1) in Books
Apr 6, 2023 (Updated Apr 10, 2023)
There is little hope at the beginning of this book. Reychel is a slave and has to shave her head every morning. Not only that but she is not allowed near any windows unless her master says so, which is usually when he calls her into a meeting. She is nearing her 15th birthday and is not looking forward to the 'honour' of having his brand burnt into her scalp.
This story fairly skips along and you are introduced to a variety of characters and situations. Reychel has to learn that a darker side exists in most people. She is accused of being naive but her situation in life hasn't exactly been there to give her experience. Who should she trust and who should she not? This is something that Reychel has to find out quickly as other people are depending upon her.
I really enjoyed this story and am continuing on my Cloud Prophet journey as I am now reading Oubliette, book 2.
Definitely recommended for Fantasy readers.

Merissa (12038 KP) rated Oubliette (Cloud Prophet Trilogy #2) in Books
Apr 6, 2023 (Updated Apr 10, 2023)
This book follows immediately on from Anathema and you are straight back in the action. Reychel is thrust through a portal which opens up in The Southern Kingdom. This takes her away from everything she knows, or thought she knew, and lands her firmly in the middle of haven't got a clue. They are expecting her however and once more she feels the pressure of being The Prophet when she really doesn't know how to use her gift.
Once again there are plots and subplots which delight you as you read. Who can Reychel (and the reader) trust? Nothing is as it seems but there is still a job to be done. What will Reychel and the others do?
This story once again was a wonder to read. It is intricate yet simple. The storyline is straightforward and yet there is so much to it. In all, this story is a delightful paradox and I am enjoying every moment. I have just purchased Severed which is the third in the trilogy so look out for a review of that one coming soon.

Merissa (12038 KP) rated Bittersweet (Faerie Song Trilogy #2) in Books
Apr 12, 2023
Just like the first book, this one is incredibly fast-paced and full of detail. The triangle that was hinted at in book 1 becomes stronger for a time before fading away to just two, but which two and will it last? This book is full of action and betrayal. It is hard to know who to trust and that is as a reader! I don't think I could cope with it for real.
One thing that I have to say is that it does become disjointed in places - and this is not me saying it due to being interrupted whilst reading because I wasn't - but at times, I did have to go back a page or two, just to see if I had missed something out.
On the whole, though, this is a very well-written, imaginative and descriptive piece of work. Having read books 1 and 2, I stand by my recommendation to all fans of YA Fantasy.

Over 18 Paranormal Romance
Merissa (12038 KP) rated Pulse and Prejudice (The Confession of Mr. Darcy, Vampire #1) in Books
Apr 14, 2023
As a long-term lover of the classics, Pride & Prejudice in particular, I wondered what I would get with this book. Would I love it or loathe it? Would it stay true to the original or go completely farcical?
What I got was a book that thrilled me with the story just as much as the original did. The language is true to form, the behaviour, the attitudes, it's all there. Only now add in the spice of an even more haughty and sultry Mr Darcy as he tries to contend with his vampiric nature.
Trust me when I say that this paranormal addition actually added something for me, it certainly didn't take anything away from the story. I devoured this book, only putting it down when I absolutely had to. If you like Paranormal and also the British Classics, then I really can't recommend this highly enough. It combines the two with excellent narrative, skill and aplomb. Highly Recommended.

Merissa (12038 KP) rated Altered (Altered #1) in Books
May 8, 2023
Seth is in the military and is suffocating under the guilt he feels at his friend's death, which he feels he should have prevented. Blue is a waitress in a very small town, living with her grandmother, and with no way out that she sees. She gets home from work and goes to bed feeling ill, to wake up to something straight out of the X Files. The whole town is dead, including her gran, or so it seems. Before long, she finds another survivor and they also find out that a private military firm is on their way, which can't be a good thing. Through trials and tribulations, they search for safety whilst being hunted at every turn, not knowing who to trust.
This is a fast-paced novel with plenty of action and romance. I am intrigued with where this story is going and can't wait to read more. Definitely recommended.
