Queer representation in the young adult book world has improved in recent years as authors and stories have focused on more than just the coming out process, which while an important milestone, isn’t a defining one.

As a result, readers who do identify as LGBTQIA can now pick up a steampunk adventure set in Victorian London, a contemporary tale about a gender fluid protagonist finding fame on the internet, and a fantasy novel featuring a lesbian romance.

Entertainment Weekly has been highlighting the best LGBTQIA representation in pop culture by putting together a list of young adult novels that showcase the wealth and diversity of the LGBTQ spectrum.

Terrible Vampire Film
I really thought I would like this. It has a good idea for a story with a vampire race living along side humans in an alternate world. That was one of the let downs as the alternate world is like a mish mash of Victorian times mixed with 60's technology, steam powered cars? Why this setting? Could have been a lot better along the line of Underworld, Equilibrium.....but falls way short.

Fatality by Firelight sucked me right in from page one. Cat’s Victorian home is the perfect cozy setting for a writer’s retreat. When one of her guests is suspected of murder, she has to play detective as well as hostess. Fatality by Firelight is full of romance, good food, and plenty of suspects.

Awesome
I absolutely loved this book. I found the characters fascinating, complex and believable. I genuinely couldn't predict which way the story was going to go and I love the fact that it was set in a kind of steampunk Victorian England setting. I especially enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of Mori's clockwork. I get that this probably isn't everyone's cup of tea, I think it's a 'love it or hate it' kind of novel but I definitely loved it.

The Mummy Case (Amelia Peabody, #3)

The third of Elizabeth Peter's Amelia Peabody (who is a Victorian archaeologist) series of books, this is the first one on which her incredibly precocious son Ramses is old enough to join Amelia and her husband on an expedition to Egypt.

Of course, this then turns into a mystery novel when it transpires that artifacts are being stolen from the digs(no surprise there), and when one of their acquaintances is murdered in Cairo ...
