"Haldeman drew on his Vietnam service to tell a story about soldiers who return to Earth after every deployment to find decades then centuries have passed. As a result, culture, sexual mores and even language change, leaving the veterans adrift. By turns melancholy, brilliant and visionary."

"A brilliantly robust science-fantasy tale, featuring a scarred, directionless Vietnam war veteran who answers a newspaper ad (remember those?) asking simply “Are you a coward?”. A rambunctious swashbuckling adventure where magic and science are blurred. Also, the story that sent me off to find a gym."

The box it comes in works. The game is in there with instructions. What a great job they did with that box. (0 more)
Everything. The controls, the difficulty is crazy, why does it take so many shots to kill these zombies. Zombies in Vietnam? WTF? (0 more)
Terrible, terrible, terrible game.

Iconic “Ride of the Valkyries” scene
A very long and slow paced film (1 more)
Hard to make out some dialogue
A well made war film
A little over rated for me. It's a good film but I think @Full Metal Jacket (1987) is a better Vietnam War film.

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)

I'm a big fan of William's and his performance here is very good, but this film hasn't aged well and some jokes and gags fall flat, nevertheless it's a strong story of the seriousness of the Vietnam war and one man's attempt to entertain the troops between the bloodshed. A good watch!

Platoon (1986)
Platoon (1986)
1986 | Action, Drama, War
This joined a glut of Vietnam movies released around the same time, but stands that bit taller due to stronger star power and in my opinion a story better told.
The stars are too many to mention here, suffice to say this is up there with the best of its genre and deserved its awards.

"This is the most gripping book I’ve read about the Vietnam War, written by a New York Times journalist who, along with David Halberstam, was one of the best on-the-ground chroniclers of that chapter in our history. And because it focuses on one single, indelible character, it reads like a great novel."

"Apocalypse Now was one of the first films that I saw that showed film could be a malleable art form, something that could exist outside of a super-traditional three-act structure. Martin Sheen and his character are sort of wrestling with more than just trying to find courage, but also trying to find some reason for why he was there in the first place. Speaking to a lot of Vietnam vets, I know it’s especially prominent in the Black experience. Soldiers felt incredibly disenfranchised about Vietnam because they weren’t being respected back home, but expected to have the motivation to fight for their country. But looking at it even from Martin Sheen’s case, his character is white, but that was part of his motivation."

I won this book awhile back on goodreads. I finally got around to reading it & have to say that I wasn't overly impressed. The book got off to a slow start. It got more interesting but not until I was into the second half of the novel.
The characters are very well written. I had a hard time connecting with Percival the Manu character however. The setting alternated between China & Vietnam in the time period of the Cultural Revolution & the Vietnam War. The story didn't really flow until Percival's son was arrested by the silent police for staging a "protest" in an attempt to impress his father who was headmaster of an American school in Cholon.
The book was well written, don't get me wrong! I just couldn't get into the story itself.
