Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Openly Straight (Openly Straight, #1) in Books

[Openly Straight] gets a new perspective on being a gay teenager. Rafe does not have the stress of coming out because in Boulder, CO he is out. In fact he is the face of being out and popular. He is just tired of being paraded around as the "gay" kid who is doing well.
When he transfers to an all boys boarding school in the east he decided to go back in the closet and just be Rafe, the boy. Unfortunately it is hard to shove things back in when they already are out.
I really think this book is a great read for anyone but especially those young people who are questioning. The characters are genuine and even Rafe wanting to be normal is, well, normal. Labels are over rated and over used in our world and I think that is one of the points Konigsberg is trying to make. The other big point is just be yourself.

Acting
Weird CGI (1 more)
Still not scary
Competes well with the original
I was a fan of the original despite the horror themes being laughable. It's a classic, you know? I had high hopes for this updated version. My biggest expection was that the producers make it actually scary, mainly making Pennywise scarier. I waited to see this because I was skeptical about this being achieved. Because I did wait till it was out on DVD/Blueray, I was influenced by the media's opinion of it. Needless to say, Kate McKinnon as Pennywise was hilarious. My hopes for this movie being scarier than it's original version were squashed, but I was now more motivated to see it. No, it isn't much scarier than the original, but it was really well done aside from some obviously CGIed moments. Superior cinematography did achieve a creepier movie. The acting was great. Overall, this was done much better than the original, actually.

Alice (12 KP) rated Godblind (The Godblind Trilogy #1) in Books

Well well well I'm mightily impressed Mrs Stephens. Mightily impressed. Easily up there on top as one of the best debuts I've read this year. Easily.
Great characters and plot work. A even balance between omg how cute (<i>that</i> chapter and holy shit how EVIL!
Evil being the overruling theme of this book with a great set of bad guys and an even greater set of good guys - let the Dancer's Light be upon you s'all I'm sayin'
Godblind had it's own flair for the dramatic and the quick switching between points of view gave the book it's own edge.
Can I have book 2 now?
