Movie Favorite

"Another one of my five favorite films would be Gimme Shelter, by the Maysles brothers. I spent many years making documentary films between my first film and my second film, Blue Valentine, and I learned to really embrace, and be humbled by life, and by telling a story where you’re telling someone else’s story. And there’s something about the Maysles brothers, and especially that movie, where they were able to witness these moments. Especially with Gimme Shelter, you know, these moments of American history — this concert at Altamont that turned into kind of the bad trip of Woodstock. And I love how they frame it with the band, the Stones, watching the footage, watching their memories; this document, this witness to this incredible time in American life — and this crime, this real crime in America. Also, for nothing else than the moment where Mick Jagger has to watch Tina Turner. Again, like watching the Scorsese movie — and the Pasolini movie — their use of music, you know, is to watch a real rock and roll movie in the theater, with that sound. It’s great."

The Outsider
The Outsider by Stephen King follows Ralph Anderson as he pursues a murder investigation as a Police Detective. To elaborate further, the investigation leads Ralph Anderson to the murder of a young boy, who was also sexually assaulted by the now, unknown murderer. Terry Maitland, a married man and Coach of Youth Sports, is a highly respected member of society, but he is to become suspected of murder owing to irrefutable Forensic Evidence and Witness Statements.

Despite this, Terry Maitland denies this immediately, and has an alibi which is seemingly irrefutable, just as the Forensic Evidence and Witness Statements against him were. His alibi positions him hours away from the where the murder occurred. Terry Maitland was now a man able to be in two places at once.

An absolutely enthralling book by Stephen King which I was unable to put down, and thoroughly enjoyed reading. Admittedly, The Outsider was one of the first Stephen King books that I read; I have since read multiple of his books.

Raw emotions and fabulous acting from Natalie Portman
This was pretty tragic, the inside story of the wife who has to witness her husband being assassinated in front of her eyes. This was about Jackie Kennedy, and the grief she felt following John F. Kennedy's death. Natalie Portman was once again magnificent, showing the raw emotion and confusion felt being a First Lady in mourning. And while there's not much else to the story, it's all about bereavement which is complex enough.

"A forceful and textured depiction the protagonist’s existence. The details of his day to day and survival tactics were exactingly photographed. The film imprints on you and makes you want something for another person. Labaki’s film does what a hard hitting social realist film can do — commits one to witness a life outside one’s own, what it takes to live it, and how precious help is. How she filmed in such hard places and got the performances left me in awe."
