Rachel Howser Roberts (96 KP) rated Salvage Trouble (Black Ocean Mission 1) in Books

Firefly Meets Wizards
This book was advertised as Firefly with wizards, and that's pretty much what it is. There is almost a one-to-one correlation between the characters in the book and the characters in Firefly. That being said, I love Firefly and enjoyed the story very much. It's a fast-paced space opera. The story felt a little short to me, more like a TV episode verses a movie. The book was self-published and had some editing problems (specifically typos).

Short and sweet
A great addition to the wizarding world collection. This is a short but sweet read with a few stories that are "classics for young wizards". JK Rowling was clever to think of adding commentaries by Dumbledore after each story, this really feels like Dumbledore is engaging with the reader. What's not to like?

Not an easy death
Contains spoilers, click to show
Set in a fractured United States, in the southwestern country now known as Texoma. A world where magic is acknowledged but mistrusted, especially by a young gunslinger named Lizbeth Rose. Battered by a run across the border to Mexico Lizbeth Rose takes a job offer from a pair of Russian wizards to be their local guide and gunnie. For the wizards, Gunnie Rose has already acquired a fearsome reputation and they’re at a desperate crossroad, even if they won’t admit it. They’re searching through the small border towns near Mexico, trying to locate a low-level magic practitioner, Oleg Karkarov. The wizards believe Oleg is a direct descendant of Grigori Rasputin, and that Oleg’s blood can save the young tsar’s life.
I'm not one for writing negative reviews and I really really wanted to like this book. Bit omg can someone tell me why Charlaine Harris is constantly writing about stupid annoying women? Considering the girl losses pretty much her love and friends in the first chapter she hardly has any emotional response. I just don't get the storyline or world building either. I won't be going on to book 2 😢 Definitely not an easy death

Movie Critics (823 KP) rated Game Of Thrones - Season 2 in TV
Jul 10, 2017
This season shows the appearance of wizards and the big premiere of the creepy White Walkers. It is smart that the series slowly adds these fantasy aspects because it could turn off some viewers with the negative “nerd” connotations that go with fantasy.

Rachel Howser Roberts (96 KP) rated A Smuggler's Conscience (Black Ocean Mission 2) in Books
Jul 9, 2018
A Little Less Firefly, A Little More Jurassic Park
In the second novel, the characters start to come into their own a little, instead of being Firefly knockoffs. The story is very much a Firefly meets Jurassic Park, with wizards. The editing was a little better in this book. There weren't any major noticeable typos (that I caught).

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2165 KP) rated Crouching Buzzard, Leaping Loon (Meg Langslow, #4) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Meg is helping out her brother at his new computer company, Mutant Wizards. Unofficially, she's trying to figure out what is going wrong in the company. Unfortunately, before she can figure it out, the office practical joker is killed. The humor is a little light, but the mystery is strong.

David McK (3369 KP) rated The Magic of Recluce (The Saga of Recluce #1) in Books
Jan 30, 2019
If ever there was an argument for Goodreads to expand beyond a 5-star rating system, this is it: better than some other books I've rated 1 star, but not as good as some others I've rated as 2 stars.
The first book in what has become known as The Saga of Recluce, I found this to be quite unusual in that (in this world world), it equates the White Wizards with evil (or chaos) and Black Wizards with good (or order). In many respects, this is also a coming-of-age tale, with the central protaganist maturing throughout the course of the story: a story that, I felt, could have been told in about 1/2 the number of pages if the author didn't insist on detailing each and every little iota of noise - who wants to read about (roughly, and all told) a page or two per chapter of Wheee-urrrggg (stomach noises) or caw-caw (bird noises) or thrum-thrum-thrum (hoof-beats)?!?
