"Woody Allen — namely the Diane Keaton collaborative days — those movies were really important to me when I was like 15, 16 years old, because it was when I discovered watching them and went through the canon. I, for the first time, had seen a woman that I was like, “Oh, I can be that kind of a woman. I’m not really the nerd, I’m not really the charactery person. I’m not really the sexy one, but I am a neurotic, nervous, but semi-intelligent one, but I also say stupid things.” It felt comforting to know that that was an example of a kind of woman I could be when I grew up and when I was going through that transition in teenagehood."

"She’s an extremely talented writer. Her first novel, set in the 1950s, is about a woman who grew up with a very eccentric mother, which, of course, is why I related to it."

"Andrea Arnold’s fresh and gripping portrayal of a young woman navigating her burgeoning sexuality in the housing projects of Essex. The scenes are fraught with tension, and the performances are out of sight."

I don't get teary-eyed at girl power. I got teary-eyed.
I read somewhere (probably on Twitter) about women getting teary-eyed because of the sense of girl power that Wonder Woman gave them. I kind of scoffed at that, putting it down to 'emotional types'. And then I watched the movie, and at the key charging scene, I teared up! I couldn't believe it! But I'm able to laugh at myself about it, because it just proved how powerful aspects of Wonder Woman really were.

Wonder Woman changed the game for a lot of little girls and boys. It made them see that females can be strong and independent without guys telling them what to do or how to do it. It will always get major points from me for that.

Also, it was well-paced, fantastically acted, and I'm not above admitting that Gal Gadot is an absolute pleasure to watch on screen.

Patty Jenkins did a great job on Wonder Woman, and Gal Gadot made it even better.

Another Outstanding Trip Back in Time
When midwife Sarah Brandt gets a note form Nelson Ellsworth, her neighbor’s son, she is intrigued. She agrees to their meeting only to learn that Nelson has gotten a woman pregnant, a woman who doesn’t seem to want to marry him. Nelson asks Sarah to examine the woman, but something about their encounter seems off. Sarah doesn’t give it much thought until the woman is murdered and Nelson is arrested for the crime. With the help of NYC detective Frank Malloy, she begins to investigate. What is happening?

I hadn’t realized how much I’ve come to enjoy this series until I picked up the book. I was immediately lost in the world of 1890’s New York City, and Sarah and Frank are outstanding guides. They lead a cast of strong characters, and I love watching them interact and their slow burn romance. I did figure some things out early, but I was still glued to the page as there were twists and complications I didn’t see coming.
