Suswatibasu (1701 KP) rated Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class in Books

Detailed at times, but loses thread in the end
This is an important read in terms of understanding how the current generation of the working class has continued to be victimised especially after the rule of Margaret Thatcher.
From the miners' strikes and Hillsborough, to the modern day label of Chav, the working class have been vilified in order to divide, rule and exploit. Owen Jones explains the ideology fairly well but falls short in providing detailed figures.
And while I agree with most of what he says, including the working class should all stick together, there were some elements that he defends including racists such as Jade Goody, that I could not get on board with. Good, but slightly disappointing.

The title misrepresents and undersells this book, which is in fact a well researched and written essay on modern day perceptions of the ‘working class’ and what is means to be labelled as such.

easy to use
This is a great way for teachers to keep in touch with parents. I love getting random pictures of what the class is working on, especially when I receive a picture of my child. It can be a great pick me up on a rough day, and helps keep me informed about what things my child is working on.

Frustrating and irritating
This story while being completely politically incorrect, as someone of Indian descent, I can say there are some home truths. No doubt corruption is rampant in India, however, I don't think Aravind Adiga has the right to sit on his middle class Oxford educated pedestal and lecture the working class masses for their aspirations. This should have been written from a naval gazing perspective, in the circles that Adiga is more familiar with.
Slightly astounded that this won the Man Booker Prize.

Another bleak British belter
British cinema tends to be a)about working class people and b) be very miserable. I had a group of American friends staying over and shared with then a selection of British films. They all admitted to feeling suicidal at the end of it.
Some people will watch Funny Cow and expect a rip roaring comedy about a female stand up comedian. That it is not. This is the story of a working class rebel fighting domestic violence and oppression by seeing the funny side. It is brave and probably be very misunderstood by most. For me it was a poignant reminder of the fight some people have to be heard. A brave and strong film.
