ClareR (5879 KP) rated Friedrichstrasse 19 in Books
Jun 11, 2023
Friedrichstrasse 19 is 6 stories set in the same building over its lifetime. We see Berlin through the eyes of those that lived in the building between 1906 and 2019, and there are some serious historical moments as well as cultural highlights: a woman in the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion) in 1986; a photographers apprentice in 1906; an unhappily married Jewish woman who meets an actress pre-WW2; the Berlin Airlift post WW2 era, when the actress is trying to find her Jewish lover (she knows there’s little chance); 1969 and a photographer finds a young GDR escapee and decides to help her; 2019, a divorcee originally from the East, who met her ex-husband on the night that the Wall fell.
All intriguing characters and stories that give a glimpse into urban life in Berlin, as well as its history. It probably helped that I was familiar with the history of Germany generally (thanks to a German degree many years ago!), and I make a point of reading fiction set in Germany when/ if I come across it. And this is a pleasure when I come across books like Friedrichstrasse 19!

The Craggus (360 KP) rated The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) in Movies
Feb 13, 2019
Not everything about The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) is awesome but, as the movie itself is at pains to point out, that's okay too.
The metatextual flourish that crowned the first movie becomes something of a distracting liability this time around, as you find yourself constantly trying to read the ongoing adventures for their real-world subtext. Thankfully it’s pretty artfully done with the developments of Bricksburg’s population neatly mimicking the early teenage obsessions of darkness and angst in storytelling...

Codus (2 KP) rated Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande in Music
Mar 6, 2019
Obvious bangers like "thank u, next" and "7 Rings." (2 more)
There are plenty of remixes, and Mixes.
Very telling of style, while experimenting with new styles
A Fairly Balanced, but Far-reaching album
Being the proclaimed "Grounded-Pop-Queen", Ari brings a lot to the table for 2019; with the obvious bangers "thank u, next" and "7 Rings."There are plenty of remixes, and Mixes of several songs that will stimulate the club scenes for years to come, celebrating the young artist as the new Mariah Carey.

The Craggus (360 KP) rated Rocketman (2019) in Movies
May 25, 2019
And it seems to be, he lived his life burning candles at both ends. Rocketman (2019) Review
The real genius of “Rocketman”, other than Elton John and Bernie Taupin themselves, is the wonderful narrative conceit of framing the story as a rehab confessional. It allows the makers or this musical fantasy to dive deep into the unreliable narration of a man who may be willing to air the dirty laundry of his past but still has a modern-day brand and reputation to protect...

The Craggus (360 KP) rated Aladdin (2019) in Movies
May 25, 2019
A fool off his guard could fall and fall hard for Disney’s surprisingly beguiling Aladdin (2019)
In terms of what you might be expecting, Disney’s live-action adaptation of their own animated take on Aladdin is much more than a diamond in the rough. Against the odds, and certainly expectations, Guy Ritchie and his likeable and talented cast have managed to deliver a cave of wonders which honours the original classic and yet still manages to find enough new angles to make the story feel new again...

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated X2: X-Men United (2003) in Movies
Jun 10, 2019
Fans had to wait three years for the release of X2, and with it came a much better film in almost every way. By introducing new mutants including Nightcrawler, played fabulously by Alan Cumming, to proceedings, X2 was a triumph in the superhero genre that brought this untested genre into the mainstream. The opening scene in which Nightcrawler tries to assassinate the US President is one of the best action sequences put in a superhero film, with perfect pacing and great tension building.
