David McK (3496 KP) rated The Day After Tomorrow (2004) in Movies
Nov 20, 2019 (Updated Sep 25, 2022)
Roland Emmerich sure likes his disaster movies.
This is his 2014 disaster movie that, taking climate change as it's starting point, has entered the popular vernacular - "it's like the day after tomorrow out there" - and, until the movie 2012 came along (I'm typing this in 2019) also must have held the record for portraying natural disaster on the big screen.
The main focus of this one is on both Jake Gylenhall and Dennis Quaid, with the former becoming trapped in New York when a series of natural disasters leads to a new ice-age leading to the latter (who, natch, is an experienced climatologist) to trek has way across the frozen North America to rescue his son.

The best view comes after the hardest climb. Free Solo (2019) Review
In a world of ever-increasing strip-mining of existing properties for prequels and spin-offs, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine someone would set out to make a whole movie about the opening sequence of “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier”.
Of course, that was fantasy and “Free Solo” is reality and although the climbing of El Capitan is the film’s crowning glory, the real hook of the documentary is in its exploration of what drives Alex Honnold to do what he does, proving that there’s so much more to the compulsion to climb a mountain than ‘because it’s there’...

The Craggus (360 KP) rated Tolkien (2019) in Movies
May 27, 2019
Two wasted hours about the author of The Two Towers: Tolkien (2019) Review
“Tolkien” has little or no magic about it, except the ordinary everyday magic which helps almost two hours disappear slowly and drearily when large stupid folk like the Craggus buy their tickets. It is inclined to be dull in the middle (and also the beginning and the end); dress in drab colours (chiefly tweeds and mud browns); wear out your patience as it regales you with the edited vignettes of J R R Tolkien’s early life through his fever dream flashbacks in the trenches of World War I, the scenes of which are surprisingly, jarringly graphic and provide no deep fruity laughs at all.

Little Ray Of Sunshine (41 KP) rated Dumplin' (2018) in Movies
Jan 9, 2019
Dumplin' is a must watch film of 2019
Wow, this film made me cry as you rooting for WillowDean Dickson nicknamed Dumplin' to achieve her goal to win the beauty pageant. This film shows you that if you put your mind to it you can do it. Also if you plus size you can still be worth in beauty and fashion. I feel Danielle Macdonald (plays Dumplin') role in this film will take her on to amazing films. I love how this shows all girls that you can feel body positivity any size. It makes me feel that I need to proud of my body I was born in.
It's worth the watch.
It's worth the watch.

ClareR (5784 KP) rated Frankenstein in Books
Jun 23, 2019 (Updated Jun 23, 2019)
What will people think of the books published in 2019 in 2119, I wonder? This scared readers when it was originally released, but I think we've become immune to the effects of this particular book - Frankenstein has been made into so many films over the years, and the story has been manipulated and changed so much, that when I started to read this, I didn't even know HOW the story was going to go! And I've read it before (I was a teenager, and that *might* have been a while ago). I'm glad I read it again, though. Mary Shelley must have really set the cat amongst the pigeons with this subject matter though - and by the fact that she was female (shock, horror!!).

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) in Movies
Jul 7, 2019
Tom Holland (2 more)
Jake Gyllenhaal
Teenage romantic subplot
Spider-Man: Far From Home is another slam dunk for Tom Holland’s web-slinger. With a script that perfectly balances humour and emotion, it may be the funniest MCU film yet, this is a film with massive re-watch value with lots of nostalgia and a fabulous cast. Nevertheless, the dodgy special effects do pull you out of the illusion at times and that just stops it from achieving a perfect five stars.
Stick around for two post-credit sequences in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
