"The best film about alcoholism I’ve ever seen. Not so much about drinking as the alcoholic’s search for meaning in a world that is slowly losing definition. Malle’s camera is also masterful at capturing the experience of being hammered."

"This has the harsh tone of fictionalized life, and Jay Gatsby’s experiences draw heavily on Fitzgerald’s descent into alcoholism, and his wife Zelda’s succumbing to mental illness. Nobody in the English-speaking world has been able to write sentences like this author."

Incredibly beautiful show, not to be missed!
Another show that is too beautiful for words. This show touches on everything.. loss, alcoholism, obesity, adoption, racism and most importantly, family. Be prepared with your tissues as there is no way to watch an episode without spilling some tears! Incredible cast, brilliant writers, absolutely not to be missed!

One of the stars from the TV show Babylon 5 talks about her life and overcoming alcoholism. While I would have loved more about Babylon 5 since it's my favorite TV show, I still found the book fascinating and had a hard time putting it down.

Funny and sad
Super. This novel is written with a first person childhood narration. Whilst this is problematic with regards to the authenticity of McCourts memory, you can not criticise him for his portrayal of childhood innocence. The novel is fantastic, great visual images, told from a convincing narrator, covering topics such as religion, poverty, alcoholism, hunger, death and growing up. I just loved it.

Mads mikkelsen (0 more)
It's unusual for me to watch a movie with subtitles at the cinema but this is a rare time. Anyway for a movie that deals with alcoholism and the effects on four teachers is excellent with standout performance from mads mikkelsen speaking in Danish which didn't bother me and for once not playing the villain which he seems to do alot of. Overall good movie worthy of its Oscar win this year

"I was shocked at the truths and magnificence of this biography; I didn’t think she (or anyone) had it in her. Throw all the Beats away: only the misunderstood colossus - Kerouac – remains. Who’s really read him, anyway? It’s all about that buffoon Cassady, and idiotic fanboy quotes… “the only ones for me are the mad ones” – yuck. Read the above for the real Weegee/Whitman ecstatic-horrific experience of genius, alcoholism, fame and the merciful, merciless Spirit that rules us."

"Tennessee Williams’s short stories are eclipsed by his plays, but they are by no means outclassed. His ear for dialogue, his eye for character and his dramatic gifts are as powerful in his stories as they are in his plays. Like the plays, the stories are flavored with a connoisseur’s taste for the strange and bizarre, including cannibalism, incest, rape, castration, nymphomania, alcoholism and murder. My favorite among the stories is the fiendish “Desire and the Black Masseur,” but there are many, many runners-up."
