Time. Is it really what we think it is?
If you're looking for a gritty, action packed sci fi - this is not it. This is more of a thought provoking trope through the human concept of time. Our time is linear, we go from A to Z, birth to death, start to finish. This alien encounter twists that ideal into something that your mind may have trouble wrapping around and if you're into working out the finer details it's definitely worth watching a second time. Overall it's an interesting movie, however it is a little slow and at times can be tedious, it never had me on the edge of my chair or dying to know what happens next, however, it is a decent film. It doesn't go in my favourites list, nor is it something I'd watch again, but it is a thought provoking movie with interesting characters.

Captain Marvel (2019)
Captain Marvel (2019)
2019 | Action, Adventure
Predictably solid Marvel brand-extension is another of those movies where the main character is never actually referred to by their superhero codename, which is a little odd as the film is unafraid to embrace the silliness of its subject matter elsewhere. Slightly convoluted plot concerns Brie Larson's character, who is a fierce alien warrior or a feisty USAF jet pilot (finding out exactly who she is is central to the plot). Aliens infiltrate Earth in 1995, Larson has to team up with Samuel L Jackson (pre-eyepatch) to stop them.

Generally pretty good fun, especially once you get past the (intentionally?) cryptic first act. Good jokes, good action, and the film's big moments are well staged. Larson, Jackson, and Ben Mendelsohn all contribute thoroughly tongue-in-cheek performances which are exactly what the material demands. Dances lightly around the potential girl-power subtext, although arguably misses a trick by not putting the Spice Girls on the soundtrack. Maybe next time.

Mar-Vel-ous
At this point Marvel can really do no wrong. When it comes to their movies (esp original ones) they have a formula that's worked well so far so why change it. Really we've not had a bad MCU movie since iron man 3 & thor 2 and even they were watchable and in parts mildly enjoyable. Here we have excellent action with just enough comedy to give people laughs without being silly and considering this is about shape changing aliens, silly was a possibility. But theres a good story at its core and nice character development with a few twists and turns to keep everyone interested. We also get Goose - the greatest space cat since Jonesy from Alien!!...2 good post credits scenes as per normal - 1 serious story one and 1 funny but worth sticking around for. The next month or so needs to fly past.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Destroy All Monsters (1968) in Movies

Destroy All Monsters (1968)
Destroy All Monsters (1968)
1968 | Sci-Fi
Ninth Godzilla movie earns an extra point just for sheer chutzpah. A bit like a monster version of The Expendables, but with better acting. In the distant future of 1999, aliens take over monster version of wildlife preserve, set about causing mischief in the great cities of Earth.

The utter gravity of the performances when coupled to the completely preposterous plot results in a movie which it is almost impossible to take seriously: there is the odd sign even the original film-makers had their tongues in their cheeks. Still, it has all your favourite monsters in the same movie (even in the same scene, most likely), although the prominence of the different characters depends more on what state the monster suit is in than their actual fame. Film-makers arguably missed a trick in making the climactic monster battle more of a mugging than a grand melee, but you can't have everything. Ridiculous, awesome: awesomely ridiculous, ridiculously awesome.

The 5th wave (2016)
The 5th wave (2016)
2016 | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Thick-headed attempt to secure a slice of that lucrative post-Hunger Games YA demographic pie wastes the talents of Chloe Grace Moretz, Liev Schrieber, and various CGI technicians. Aliens show up and start conquering the world really slowly, starting by shutting down Instagram and moving on to floods, bird flu, etc etc. Plucky teenage girl sets out to save her young sibling while juggling the attentions of a couple of carefully-differentiated young hunks.

Painfully obvious and derivative, leadenly assembled; mostly just plain bad. What moves it beyond the inept and into the realms of the regrettable is a plotline about child soldiers - if this is trying to make a real-world point it does so with incredible crassness, though it may well be the film simply doesn't operate on that level of awareness. So-so box office returns means it appears we may be spared the threatened sequels; who know, maybe there is a God.

The Captain Is Dead
The Captain Is Dead
2014 | Fighting, Science Fiction
I have only played this game once.

In The Captain is Dead, you and your teammates are going to be rushing around your ship attempting to hold the aliens off while you fix the ship’s engines (Jump Core).

I loved that you have to work as a team, and we would constantly be thinking of strategies, after every turn. It was great fun. You also get to choose from so many different characters, and they all do different things, have different number of actions you can play, and have different special powers.

I think that this game gets better and better the more you play, as you start to know what you're supposed to do, and how to win the game together. but there are so many ways to lose, and only one way to win, which makes the game almost unbeatable.

Needless to say, we lost (BADLY), but I was great fun and amazing experience.

The music is hailed as "groundbreaking" by the DVD case, but is just kinda meh for me.
Very fun, but visually dated
I remember loving this movie when I was younger, and on rewatching it today I still do, but I have to admit that the visuals haven't aged well. The story is great, if occasionally predictable, and most of the characters are quirky and unique (Gune is a personal favorite!) If they'd restrained themselves to using the early CGI to animate the villainous Drej, a race of aliens made of pure energy, that would have probably aged okay. Those scenes still work. But the fact that all the mechanical elements, ships and such, even spacesuited characters are animated in decidedly dated CGI pulls you out of the narrative pretty fast.

An underrated Disney film, Lilo and Stitch is a great movie. It shows the hardships of keeping family together and the value of knowing you can pick your family, sort of.
Lolo is a strange kid even under Disney standards, with her stories, voodoo dolls, and taking random (tourist) pictures. There are two places that never fail to make me cry and if I don't at the scene with the hammock when Nani is singing to Lilo then I lose it when Stitch is lost in the forest waiting on his family. It's not all sad Lilo teaching Stitch about how to behave using Elvis as a model and everything falling apart is priceless.
I love David and although Nani is too busy to be looking for any romantic anything he doesn't overly pressure her and you can tell he cares for her and her family. Although he is way to chill when he meets all the other aliens.
Good movie for any age.

Sammie Hilton (3 KP) rated the PlayStation 4 version of No Man's Sky in Video Games

No Man's Sky
No Man's Sky
2016 | Action/Adventure
On first play No Mans Sky was terrifying and there was a distinct lack of an intro to the controls which for this game is definitely needed. Upon landing on an acrid desert planet (assuming very likely to be a common first style of planet for most players) you have to harvest resources to fix your ship and get the hell outta there.
Been playing it a few months now and more comfortable, you can either explore the galaxy on your own time after completing some home story missions, or follow the main storyline if you feel you need more to do. You can trade at space stations, buy a new space ship, talk to the local aliens etc. Upon entering one galaxy you get the chance to win a freighter. Both my husband and I play No Mans Sky and our game play couldn't be more different so we have both seen various aspects of the game.
