Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Thor: Rargnarok took the best parts of a couple different Marvel Comics storylines, fused them together into an 80's buddy action comedy movie.

If you apperciated the tone of GotG, like Thor but not his movies you'll love this. Of the 17 films in the franchise this one is in the top half.

I am glad Hulk's Warbond, though not called as such in the film, survived. Hope to see more of Kord and Miek, maybe even a spin off of there own.

Grumpy Old Men- is a classic. It mixes comedy, drama and romanic. Both Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are excellent in it, a dynamic duo.

The plot: John Gustafson (Jack Lemmon) and Max Goldman (Walter Matthau) are two curmudgeonly neighbors who have been at each other's throats for years. The rivalry of the former friends intensifies when Ariel (Ann-Margret) comes along and provides a love interest for both of them. When Max finds out that John is experiencing family troubles and financial ruin, however, he steps in to help. Their bond is further cemented when John has a health scare and Max makes the ultimate sacrifice for his friend.

This was the sixth film starring both Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, and their first pairing since 1981's Buddy Buddy.

Its a excellent movie.

I missed this one in the cinema when it came out (in 2017).

The only reason I've even heard of it now is due the the 2021 sequel.

Anyway, this is an action-comedy buddy movie starring Ryan Reynolds as a down-on-his-luck Bodyguard, who has to accompany Samuel L Jackson's hitman to a criminal hearing in The Hague where he is to give testimony against Gary Oldman's dictator.

With Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson on board, you know pretty much what to expect: bickering, gunfights, more bickering, swearing, bickering, gunfights ...

"Iā€™ll start with Midnight Run. Just one of the finest Goddamn movies Iā€™ve ever seen. Charles Grodin and Robert De Niro. If thereā€™s a better buddy comedy, show it to me, and Iā€™ll shake your hand. Itā€™s so funny. Itā€™s also where I learned what chorizo is. Being from Illinois, not a lot of truck stops serve chorizo and eggs. It was part of my ā€œgoinā€™ out westā€ legend, like, ā€œOne day, I will go to California, and on the way there, I will experience chorizo and eggs.ā€"

"ā€œSerpentine!ā€ The funniest movie ever made. A buddy comedy with unparalleled chemistry between the two leads, Peter Falk and Alan Arkin (and Cassavetesā€™s DNA is at work even beyond the Falk connection, as John would replace the director of the disappointing not-quite-a-sequel, 1986ā€™s Big Trouble). Falk and Arkin are a mismatch made in heaven. Rumor has it this was Brandoā€™s favorite movie and is the reason he signed on to The Freshman, which was written and directed by The In-Laws scribe Andrew Bergman. Richard Libertini almost manages to steal the film in the last act as an eccentric Central American dictator/ventriloquist/art-lover."

This is a laugh a minute comedy with arguably the best comedy actor of the time Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in his first real comedy role. They play Lloyd and Harry two lovable bumblers who travel across America to return a briefcase to an attractive socialite named Mary Swanson played by Lauren Holly. Mary is delivering the briefcase as part of a ransom but Lloyd sees her leave it and grabs it before the goons can pick it up. It's revealed that the kidnapper is a friend of Mary's family. Through their shenanigans Lloyd and Harry travel to many places on their way to Aspen to deliver the briefcase. I won't spoil any of them but rest assured you will laugh. The jokes are very fast paced and hit most of the time. My only real problem with the film is the main bad guy he's dull and not very interesting. The soundtrack is great. The song choices work with the film well. Overall I give it 4 stars out of 5 of you haven't seen it before then please check it out, if you have seen it see it again you know you want to.

š˜‹š˜¶š˜¦ š˜‹š˜¢š˜µš˜¦ still did it significantly better imo (Downey Jr. >> Martin, but Candy >> Galifianakis) but that doesn't at all hinder this from being a damn good comedy on the whole. Definitely a lighter affair for Hughes (99% of the comedy here is simply homespun "how can my day *possibly* get any worse??" histrionics done really, really superbly) but nonetheless sports a huge, pulsating heart in its chest. Was surprised with how well this skewers overt-masculinity and the usual reductive formula of these anti-buddy comedies considering its age (and even moreso fresh off the heels of the repugnant excrement that was š˜šš˜Ŗš˜¹š˜µš˜¦š˜¦š˜Æ š˜Šš˜¢š˜Æš˜„š˜š˜¦š˜“). Even if it isn't always seamless (i.e. the almost comedic abruptness of the ending reveal), it delves within both of its lead characters and gives us a good look where most movies of the genre would reduce them to the sum of their quirks. Rightfully earns its place as one of the definitive Thanksgiving movies.

Story: We start by following our two very different high school students failing at something different things. We fast forward seven years to the police academy where the two become friends to help each other overcome their problems and get through. After they get through the two get partnered up but continue to fail leading them to get transferred to ā€™21 Jump Streetā€™ program. They have to go undercover as high school students. They have to uncover a drug ring at the high school and get over the problems they faced before.

When it comes to buddy films cop we all know the basic formula and to be fair this follows everything together to keep the action and comedy blend flowing. It is good to see the mix with the high school film working as well as the idea of giving the two a chance to see how the other get through high school. Having never seen the original show I canā€™t say whether it is honest to the source material but in the end it really turns into a good action comedy in a world where the comedy films are starting to fall flat. (8/10)

Actor Review

Jonah Hill: Schmidt the high school geek who can get through all the paperwork side of the police work but lacks the physical presence Jenko has. Going undercover gives him a chance to experience the high school experiences he missed out. Jonah gives a good performance as we know he can play the teen comedy but also shows he ability to bounce of somebody elseā€™s strengths. (8/10)

Channing Tatum: Jenko after only just getting out of high school and being told he has no intelligence for a future he ends up joining the police force and until he teams up with Schmidt to help him with get through the academy. While undercover he ends up having to experience the geek in high school. Channing gives a good performance and shows that he can pull off comedy to go with his all action persona. (8/10)

Brie Larson: Molly high school student who Schmidt takes a shine to who ends up leading him to push aside his responsibilities as the cop. Brie gives a solid performance in the supporting role. (7/10)

Dave Franco: Eric the drug dealer at the school who befriends Schmidt while the two try different ways to find out who the supplier is. Dave gives a solid performance as the teenage drug dealer trying to stay cool. (7/10)

 franco

Support Cast: The drug dealers, other police officers, Schmidtā€™s parents and high school attendants all make up the support cast and all offer something for our main characters to work with to progress the story.

Director Review: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller ā€“ Good directing to balance the action and comedy perfectly. (9/10)

Action: With car chases being the main source of action they all come off very well with hints of comedy during without just being silly action. (8/10)

Comedy: The most part the comedy is all very good, but I did feel the over use of the sex jokes got boring. (8/10)

Chemistry: Hill and Tatum have brilliant chemistry together. (10/10)

Settings: The high school setting works really well for the story as we havenā€™t seen the undercover there before. (9/10)

Suggestion: It isnā€™t very often that I suggest a box office comedy but with this one I feel people should be watching. (Watch)

Best Part: Car and Motorbike Chase.

Worst Part: Slight over used of sex jokes.

Action Scene Of The Film: Car and Motorbike chase

Funniest Scene: The party

Believability: No (0/10)

Chances of Tears: No (0/10)

Chances of Sequel: Has one sequel and has talks of a third.

Post Credits Scene: No

Oscar Chances: No

Box Office: $202 Million

Budget: $42 Million

Runtime: 1 Hour 49 Minutes

Tagline: Theyā€™re too old for this shift

Overall: Enjoyable Buddy Cop Comedy

So first off this movie had the basic video game movie flaw of how do we turn a popular game into a live action movie? The overall buddy road trip aspect of this movie was pretty boring. But the comedy and the action is what ultimately saves this movie. This is Jim Carrey in a rare return to form. If there's anyone who could bring eggman to life in a believable way it's him. James Marsdens character is ultimately forgettable (like most.of the human characters) but he does add the heart aspect to this movie and the fact that sonic finally doesn't feel alone. I hope the sequels focus more on world building and less on the live action characters with the exception of Dr robotnic and his Assistant.

2019 | Action, Comedy
An action comedy that takes you for a ride.
Kumail Nanjiani hits my funny boneā€¦ again.
Like no other genre, comedy is highly personal and one personā€™s comedy gold is another personā€™s comedy nightmare (ā€œMrs Brownā€™s Boysā€ anyone?). Similarly there are some comedians that I really engage with and others that really irritate. For me, stand-up comedian Kumail Nanjiani falls into the former category. Although having had bit-part roles in many films over the last ten years, it was his starring role playingā€¦ wellā€¦ basically, himself in ā€œThe Big Sickā€ that first caught my attention. Here he repeats that starring role and delivers a deft performance as the shy and ā€˜scaredy-catā€™ driver making a pick-up he wonā€™t forget in a hurry.

Heā€™s paired here, in an unusual ā€˜buddy copā€™/ā€™not buddy copā€™ manner, with ā€œSpectreā€ bad-guy Dave Bautista, a giant of a man who displays a knack for comic delivery (albeit as the straight man) that I was not expecting.

The seeing-eye Uber man.
Bautista plays cop Vic Manning who is in an obsessive pursuit of bad-guy Oka Tedjo (Iko Uwais). Suffering from increasingly bad eyesight, Manning undergoes laser eye surgery on the very day that the ā€œbig tip-offā€ comes through. Being almost blind, Manning hires (read kidnaps) Stu to be his unwilling partner in a battle that puts Stu as well as Manningā€™s attractive artist daughter (Natalie Morales) in harmā€™s way.

Thereā€™s comedy to be mined in the blind cop set-upā€¦. itā€™s similar in some ways to the Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor comedy ā€œSee No Evil, Hear No Evilā€.

Surprisingly visceral action.
We all know that Bautista can do a good fight scene. That fight onboard a train in ā€œSpectreā€œ, with Daniel Craigā€˜s Bond, was almost on a par with the famous Connery/Shaw fight in ā€œFrom Russia With Loveā€. Here, Bautista gets to brawl with gusto in a few scenes.

In general, the ā€œactionā€ in this ā€œaction-comedyā€ is pretty full-on and entertaining. The opening scenes in particular, with Manning and officer Sara Morris (the ever-watchable Karen Gillan) taking on Tedjo in an upper floor of a high-rise building are exciting and dramatic. This is due in no small part to the acrobatic capabilities of Iko Uwais. (Uwais is an Indonesian champion at the martial art Silatā€¦ and it shows).

Slick writing that delivers some great lines.
The script is by Tripper Clancy, with this being his first US film after penning two previous German films. And it really made me laugh a lot, both in terms of some of the set up scenes (one in an animal hospital is particularly funny) and in some of the dialogue. As an example, when pushed to the limit of his stress, Stu wails ā€œSo Iā€™m gonna have to get cheap student therapists who quote white guys with Indian names and tell me that I should meditate. Iā€¦DOā€¦MEDITATE!!!!ā€.

Also top-notch is the use of music in the film. A use of the Hollies classic ā€œAir that I breatheā€ during the above mentioned Animal Hospital scene was brilliant.

Summary
Comedies need to make me laugh. This one did. Repeatedly. It even made the illustrious Mrs Movie Man laugh too. Repeatedly. As such ā€œStuberā€ comes with a ā€œrecommendedā€ from me.
