'The Girl Named Mud' gave me strong 'Where the Crawdads Sing' vibes: a girl who is raised out in the swamps, ostracized from polite society; who ends up making a living on her own until someone with true humanity steps in to help.
Mud, named by her mother after a particular verse in the Bible, lives alone and survives in the wild after the death of her mother. A couple of years after her loss, circumstances land her in the neighboring village, where she catches the attention of a preacher's wife (Grace). Mud faces many obstacles, such as who to trust, learning to read and write and speak correctly, as well as figuring out her future. Many surprises reveal themselves along the way as we read from both Grace and Mud's altering points of view.

This was the second book in the series. I enjoyed this book more than the first. A couple of characters from the initial book were also in this book and it tied the entire series in as all the books are based at the motel. I was proud of Lillian for just up and leaving. It takes a strong person to do this and someone who just snaps and has enough. I liked the change of pace in this story as it had a dangerous element to it. I guessed who the stalker was as it was obvious but I don't feel this book was written to be an 'edge of your seat thriller'. I also hadn't expected it to be. Lillian definitly grew as the book went on. Even though she was a strong woman to begin with but she became alot stronger. It also had a nice ending.

Weston Michels, I fell for you within the first couple of pages of meeting you! I think it was the fact you called her "freakin' beautiful.". You were such a nice guy, how could anyone not fall for you?!?!
Then comes the fact that we know there's something wrong with you and it takes almost half the book to find out what...I think I began to cry then :'( and continued to do so throughout when you do your damnedest to not fall for her or let her fall for you but I think it's fair to say that is almost impossible to do!
I really liked Gabe too, he came across as a bit of an arse to start with but by the end, he was making me cry too, he's actually a very sweet guy and I hope he gets a book!

I loved--abosutely LOVED--the first 65% or so of this. I loved his determination and his flirtatious behaviour, how he continuously wore her down until she gave in and did the deed. And I was so happy for them, they were such a great couple. I would have very happily given it 5 stars!
But then we get that phone call and everything went to shit! I know there has to be some issue for them to overcome but I was screaming at my Kindle internally, raging at him to stop being an arse and to just talk to her, to anyone, because it was obviously an issue for him.
In the end, he pulled his finger out and they managed to work things out but God! I wanted to smack him a little.
I'm looking forward to reading more of this authors work.

Well written with interesting characters
The characters are great and I had a lot of empathy for them, I like the setting and the story is very well written. Parts of the ending drama were particularly illustrative and I had a wonderful picture in my mind. The author uses subtleties throughout which I enjoyed but on occasion the subtle parts were then over explained (e.g. Daveys background). The storyline was quite predictable and I guessed it fairly early on but this did not detract from the enjoyment. I liked the drama at the end but thought there were a few u-turns or perhaps slight over dramatic actions/sequences. There a couple parts of the story that may not fit in the early 1900's although I realise the author choose this time frame due to the taxidermy theme.
