Very gritty and realistic look at the last days of World War II
Fury is a powerful and raw World War II story about a tank unit fighting to survive while pushing through Germany doing the tall end of the war

All the main characters do a great job strong action character moments and just powerful imagery throughout

Gran Torino (2009)
2009 | Drama
A old war vet lives in a bad, multi racial, gand filled neighbourhood and fills his days drinking beer and cleaning his prized car until he is forced into protecting his property from these gangs with the help of a unlikely ally.
It's a story of friendships that can form in unlikely situations and what levels we would reach to protect them.

1998 | Drama
McKellen teamed up with director Bill Condon in 1998 for Gods & Monsters. This period drama recounts the partly fictionalised last days of the life of film director James Whale, whose experience of war in the First World War is a central theme.

Although criticised for being overly-simplistic, McKellen’s performance received rave reviews, and he was nominated for his first Academy Award in the Best Actor category. Unfortunately, he didn’t go on to win this time around, but it remained a highlight in a career filled with fabulous work.

Tanks for Nothing
Good-looking but very, very violent war movie with a convincingly horrible depiction of life as a tanker during the dying days of the Second World War. In time-honoured style a green young recruit joins Brad Pitt's crew, loses his innocence, earns respect of his fellows.

Movie can't quite seem to decide what it wants to be - the characters are portrayed as brutalised victims, executing prisoners, and there's an extraordinarily long and uncomfortable sequence in which they avail themselves of the hospitality of some recently-liberated German women, but on the other hand it concludes with them heroically mowing down Nazis by the dozen. In the end it's not really clear whether Fury thinks that War is Hell or not, but David Ayer always tells this kind of guys-in-extremis story well.

So intense!
This is one of those films that you end up thinking about for days afterwards. It's so intense and submursive that it really takes you on its journey. It is so well filmed and the acting is incredible. It's a film I believe everyone should see. It was such a massive part of the Second World War which is often skipped over in history lessons.

"During my student days I read Henry David Thoreau’s essay On Civil Disobedience for the first time. Here, in this courageous New Englander’s refusal to pay his taxes and his choice of jail rather than support a war that would spread slavery’s territory into Mexico, I made my first contact with the theory of nonviolent resistance. Fascinated by the idea of refusing to cooperate with an evil system, I was so deeply moved that I reread the work several times."

While, reading the synopsis, this seems like the type of book I would enjoy, I have to say: I actually found this to be quite a dry read.

The first in a planned series of books ('The Adventures of Odysseus'), this one deals with the pre Trojan-war days, with (at the start of the novel) Odysseus not yet King of Ithaca. Centring primarily on one of Odysseus companions rather than Odysseus himself, this does have plenty of intrigue and action, but I (unfortunately) found none of those to be that stirring.

Not a patch on David Gemmell's Troy series ('Lord of the Silver Bow', Shield of Thunder' and 'Fall of Kings') of books.
