David McK (3473 KP) rated Jungle Cruise (2021) in Movies

Another film gettign the concurrent cinema/Disney+ (behind a paywall) release date, this one is very much a throw-back to the days of yore: the most relevant comparison I can come up with, perhaps, is my understanding of what 'The African Queen' is like (never seen that film) in that both films rely on the star power of their respective leads (here Johnson/Blunt, as opposed to Bogart/Bacall).
Like Disney's earlier 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films, this is also - loosely - based on a theme ride: this time, the setting being a cruise down the Amazon. Like 'Pirates...', this also injects a fair does of the supernatural into the proceedings: I have no idea whether or not that is part of the ride, never having been to any of the Disney resorts.
I also have to say that I felt, at times, that Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson and Emily Blunt came across more as bickering siblings rather than falling-in-love, and that Jack Whitehall's character (the brother of Emily Blunt's character) more-or-less faded into the background for a fair chunk of the movie ...

Thank you to the publisher, author and Blind Date With A Book for this Kindle copy.
Colleen Nye's romantic novel was just not my cup of tea. Apart from the fact that it was sickly sweet it felt like reading a Disney novel. It seemed very far-fetched and the writing style was a little bit too simple. Just to say I am not a fan of the romantic genre anyway and received this as part of a great initiative to read books that are not your usual milieu.

Scott Morton (1 KP) rated Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017) in Movies

Leads up to episode 9 well
This movie is not as good as the previous two Disney has released but still a very good movie. The fight scenes are very good. There are still alot of questions left for episode 9. It can get to comedic at times but it does lighten the mood for the longest movie in the series. Just like every Star Wars movie I will be seeing this one multiple times in the theater and the purchasing it when it is released on Blu Ray

Absolutely Brilliant
I remember three cartoon from years ago and I loved that so thought well if can only be as good or worse. I was wrong it was better!! If you like Disney films then put this one on your watch list and you won't be disappointed at all. Not ashamed to admit that this film was amazing. From a start to finish I sang along to all the songs with only a few minor changes to them. In short if you liked the original Cartoon film you will love this version.
Jessica Cashen (1 KP) rated Disney Manga: Tim Burton's the Nightmare Before Christmas in Books

This was my first manga....that being said it took me a bit to get used to how you have to read it. I was able to fly through it once I got the hang of it because this is one of my FAVORITE Disney movies. I really enjoyed the artwork as well. I think I would rather read manga in book form though. So I have the book to start a collection. I received an ARC copy from Netgalley for an honest review.

*This is really closer to 4.5 stars for me, seriously Goodreads we need the half stars!*
I loved the atmospheric prose here, it truly felt like reading an old school fairy tale. Not the happily ever after Disney variety, more along the lines of the dark Grimm tales. Totally unique story, with solid world building and great characters. This is one I see myself reading again and again and finding something new each time.
**Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the DRC! All opinions are my own.**

O.M.G. The beginning of this film will make you cry. The whole film runs a little long, there are too many dog gags and my patience with the small mailman was paper thin. Definitely worth watching for the beginning and the end though. The animation was spectacular. The video game for this is impossible, at least for me. Not my favorite Disney film but, heh heh, it’s up there.
Erika (17789 KP) rated Inferno Squad (Star Wars Battlefront #2) in Books
Jun 19, 2019
Set just after the events of Rogue One, this novel is about how the Empire struck back. It features the elite Inferno Squad, put together to infiltrate one of the rebel cells. The novel is also inspired by Battlefront II.
I liked the characters in general, and the story was interesting and well-paced. There are also some Easter eggs from The Clone Wars television show. Christie Golden has always been a solid author of video-game/franchise inspired stories. I hope Disney gives her another book to write.

David McK (3473 KP) rated Beauty and the Beast (2017) in Movies

Live-action remake of the 1994 Disney film which (from what I remember) sticks almost exactly to that source material, with Emma Watson's Belle perhaps given a bit more independence than before.
Mostly the same songs as before (although I'm not sure about Hermione - sorry, sorry, Emma Watson - vocals), with maybe one or two new additions, with those songs serving more as time fillers than for moving the plot along (compare these to those in Aladdin and you'll see what I mean) - that's not a criticism, as such, just an observation!
