A great surprise
I hadn't really expected very much from this film, but it was actually a brilliant and heartwarming surprise. It has a great cast and is wonderfully acted - McKenna Grace is exceptional for a child actor and I was even impressed with Chris Evans, it's been so long since I've seen him in something that isn't Marvel related and it's nice to see.

The film itself is a mixture of humour and a sometimes heartwrenching and emotional story about a gifted child. It has a fairly short runtime which is also refreshing, but I actually think it could have been a little longer. It's well shot and scripted and was just an all round delight to watch. And seeing Chris Evans with cats? Kinda hard to resist.

A missing girl in the modern day dovetails with Evan finding the skeleton of a girl who went missing 25 years ago. Are the two connected? We're back to the charm and intrigue of the series now in another strong book.

Rumors that Camelot is just outside of the village and plans to build an amusement park lead to murder, and Constable Evans is right in the middle of it again. The characters grow better and the plot is just as interesting as the first book.

Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
2017 | Fantasy, Musical, Romance
The original beauty and the beast is my favourite Disney film ever so this was a treat to see it in love action. It didn't disappoint though I couldn't warm to Emma Watson as Belle or the reimagined look of my fav characters like Mrs Potts or lumiere. But Luke Evans was outstanding as Gaston and the back story of Belle's mum was very touching.

Unique, masterful coming-of-age film
Richard Linklater is incredible. He has such patience and a wonderful eye for human nature. To make a film over 11 years is no mean feat and yet he accomplished a unique and beautiful piece of art. The film itself is about the childhood and adolescence of Mason Evans Jr. and the subtle changes of growing up, that make this an original coming of age movie.

Life in a high-rise tower falls into chaos after frequent power outages create a clash between the classes. The film was based upon the book by the same name by JG Ballard. There were obvious differences from book to movie, but the changes made sense. Tom Hiddleston did a good job as Laing, and Luke Evans was savage as Wilder. The score of the film set the perfect tone, and Portishead's cover of SOS was on point.

Betsy the barmaid is discovered to have psychic powers by a visiting American. Evan doesn't believe until Betsy shows up at his house with a vision of a dead body - a vision that turns out to be true. Does she truly have a gift? Another great read with a strong plot and charming characters.

Dracula Untold came out around the same time that Game of Thrones was beginning to take off, which would explain why the whole film feels like a poor man's GoT and why it has half of it's cast involved. It only held my interest due to the subject matter of Dracula himself. Luke Evans is a decent enough lead, and this take on Dracula's origin story is engaging to a degree, but underneath the stylish vampire visuals, it's just another sword wielding war film.

International Star Fest
Not knowing what to classify this movie as has been difficult. It has many aspects and genres attached to it. From horror to action to drama and nail biting thrills, Snowpiercer is an absolute ride that takes its viewer on a twisted and winded road through ice caps and snow drifts, culminating with a catastrophic turn of events that left me wondering what the fuck could happen next.
I recognized a few of the foreign to me actors. Seeing Tilda Swinton in an almost comedic role was awesome. Chris Evans left no inclination that he had ever played the wholesome Captain America with this part. Admiting to canibalism, while shedding tears of regret and shame, a truly awesome performance.
This film keeps it coming through its length, but there were moments of boredom about half way through, hence the 9 rating.
If you're looking for something thrilling to kill an afternoon with, I highly recommend Snowpiercer.

Original, Unique Story
I love this film, it's dark, grungy, and original. I adore the concept and how the story plays on the societal 'class' system. A completely different role than I'm used to seeing Chris Evans in (mainly crisp, clean, polite Captain Steve Rogers lol) so it was a refreshing change to see him as such a grungy character. Special effects were gorgeous and the story was left in a place where the viewer could determine what would happen next. Will definitely watch again!
