John Lydon recommended Doctor Who in TV (curated)

Doctor Who
Doctor Who
1963 | Adventure, Family, Sci-Fi

"when I was young, Doctor Who was wonderful. The Daleks were the thing. They were so evil, cold, dead, and emotionally devoid that it was a fairly good representation, really, of institutions. The cruelty of them. As a kid you're always just dismissed, viewed negatively, and given no hope or place in their scheme of things. It's still true today. Moreso than ever! And I used to love something the BBC used to do. They'd show Harold Pinter plays. Things that would take you outside of yourself and open yourself to different possibilities."

The Evil Dead (1981)
The Evil Dead (1981)
1981 | Horror
What is there to say about The Evil Dead that hasn't been said before? It's a bonafide genre classic, and a masterclass in what can be done with a tiny budget. The practical effects are equally impressive as they are gross. Tom Sullivans effects work is quite something, even all these years later. Combine all of this with Sam Raimis erratic, invasive, and sometimes nauseous camera work, and the result is a unique and disturbing horror ride that still has the capacity to scare 40 years on.

Also, Bruce fucking Campbell.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Unique (1 more)
Funny yet horrible
Maybe a little implausible (0 more)
When it comes to unique comedy/horror, Cabin in the Woods ranks right up there with The Evil Dead, Shaun of the Dead and the other classic comedy horror films.

It kind of a tale of two halves as the standard teenagers stranded in the woods tale starts to unravel with splashes of other scenes which seem unrelated when you first watch them. Then it slowly comes together.

The elevator ride midway through the film embarks the remaining characters on a descent to another world where all sorts of other unique creatures, ghouls and goblins reside.

The climax of the film has to be seen to be believed, but will not be forgotten once you see it. There is no formula here and is truly one-of-a=kind.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
2004 | Comedy, Horror
The first film in the Cornetto triology and arguebly the best.
The idea for this film was spawned from another Pegg/Frost?Wright project Spaced, when Peggs character Tim is having a dream inspired by the Resident Evil game.
From that short sequence Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright came up with Shaun of the Dead.
I dont want to spoil this movie by over reviewing it but when I went to see this when it came out I howled with laughter.
I watched it again this week and still find it so funny.
A solid must see film.
