"This was from college and Charles had it, and obviously I knew those songs. Jimmy Page and [John] Bonham and John Paul Jones did the arrangements to this song, 'Hurdy Gurdy Man'. Fucking hell man! That's epic! Also, I like the sensibility of basically saying "fuck you", well, not fuck you, but it was the freedom of the 70s - I know 'I Love My Shirt' isn't on that album but I just love that, it was like, "Wow, what kind of freedom can you get talking about your favourite goddamn shirt!" And washing it in the stream! And he'll say, "Know what I mean?" [laughs] There's a song there, 'Sunshine Superman', and I played it for Charles and he went, "Shit!" It's so strange. It took me a while, it's got - [imitates guitar] - it's got all these weird sonic spots, it's more sonic really than the melody, because the melody there, what is that?"

"People forget how revolutionary they were at the time. I remember seeing them in town when they were a 'goth' band. They weren’t really but they had that goth on guitar [Andy Couzens]. People think of them now about the way they look and everything but they were the last people in Manchester to start dressing like that. Everybody else in Manchester already looked like that. But really, when this album came out after all the trouble they had it was just perfect. When you got to hear the full version of 'I Am The Resurrection', it was just perfect. Ian had the image and he was a great frontman, Reni and Mani were like the tightest rhythm section ever. And John was a great guitarist yeah, but he was also in charge of this amazing sleeve art and this look that was really important to them and was different to anything else that was going on as well."

"Zappa divides opinion massively. Bottom line is, he's a dick. And you can't escape it. The years as they've gone on have been less kind to him. His later stuff is horrible – misogynistic, very jock-ish. He was famously anti-drugs, would fine band members if they used drugs. He was very showy too. I've got a bunch of his records and I never listen to them… apart from Hot Rats, which I just love. The cover is fantastic and deeply unsettling. The band playing it are insanely talented – Ian Underwood, Shuggie Otis… Beefheart. For me, the album is the first two tracks. 'Willie The Pimp' has one of my favourite guitar solos ever – it's completely mind-melting. Zappa had a really big following in Liverpool amongst casuals – I remember going up there in the '90s and seeing his name daubed on walls in emulsion. Considering how much he hated drugs, he really did seem to connect with stoners."

"The name alone does it for me. It's so evocative. The first thing I heard off this record was via the Super Furries. I think they'd supported the Furries in the States early on. Gruff told me, "You've got to hear this song, it's called 'Indian Bones'." The title was heavy enough – what the hell was the record going to sound like? This record is transcendental guitar music; super heavy, properly blistering. Maybe a record like this stretches the definition of psychedelia for some people, but I don't think so. I think of Black Sabbath as an acid-folk band. Ozzy has one of the best folk voices ever. If that's what you believe and it works for you, then that's fine; it's how I've experienced this music and it is why this list works for me. Psychedelia is otherly music, whatever the instrumentation, however heavy, however soft. This Dead Meadow record just happens to be super, super heavy."

"As a band I love their vibe, the way they look and interact – all with their own little character going on. But I’m obsessed with [lead singer] Brittany Howard. There’s something about Brittany that puts fire in my soul. She reminds me of Etta James, Ann Peebles – she’s so fucking full of soul, overflowing, dripping, that I almost can’t handle it. On their most recent album [Sound & Color], there’s a song called Don’t Wanna Fight. Brittany comes in with a scream: “YOOOOOOOOOOOW!” I’d love to experiment more with my own voice like that. She’s exceptional, she blows my mind. I almost want to start playing the electric guitar, just to be more like her. Back in 2013, she was in the next-door dressing room at the Grammys. We were both getting ready – I think I was putting on my Spanx – and we met. It turned out she’d brought her grandmother to the Grammys. My love went even deeper for her at that point."
