Danny Boyle is a director who rarely disappoints me even with weaker material his unique visual style makes for entertaining viewing. For me this was one of his better recent efforts and the story here is compelling with twists and turns galore (some plausible and some perhaps not so plausible) as we slowly unravel multiple plot lines connected with hypnosis and a botched art heist. The film is well paced and visually very impressive and kept me suitably hooked. The performances are also strong with James McAvoy and Vincent Cassel being the standouts but if the films plot leaves you scratching your head just a bit too much then there is always an eyebrow raising turn from Rosario Dawson that will certainly leave you with fond memories of the film.

"I love Hopscotch and dream of making a movie like it. It’s just full of fun and double crosses. Ronald Neame is very unsung as a director, but he made the coolest movies. He worked a lot with David Lean, so I think it’s interesting to look at Lean, who did these giant epics, and Neame, who was way more experimental and wild in choosing the kinds of movies he was going to make. Hopscotch is basically a perfect film, and Walter Matthau is unreal in it. You watch him and you think, that’s what American actors should have been and should always be. Hopscotch has that heist-noir and cat-and-mouse thing going on, but it’s also bright and goofy and funny and hits a tone that’s so unique and clear."

The point at which the Fast and the Furious movies started moving more and more away from their petrol head origins - as exemplified by the cut from pre-race to after race roughly halfway through, instead of showing that actual race - while also the movie that first brings Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson to the cast, as Luke Hobbs.

This one picks up directly from the ending of the previous movie, and starts with O'Connor and Mia on the run from the law, ending up in Rio de Janeiro where they get pulled into another 'one last job' (and you know how those always go ...), leading to them reuniting with Dom, assembling a 'crew', and then onto a heist that very much put me in mind of 'The Italian Job'!
