Awix (3310 KP) rated Frailty (2002) in Movies

Brooding Southern Gothic horror movie starring and directed by Bill Paxton. Two young boys don't quite know how to react when their father announces he has been chosen by God to become a demon hunter; this involves hitting people with a big axe a lot. Low-key stuff for the most part; Paxton does a good job of taking you into the world of this family and their rather peculiar take on what is 'normal', strong performances all round.

Sadly the film is virtually undone by a frame story featuring a pre-McConnaissance Matthew McConnaughey, leading up to a long-way-sub-Shyamalan twist ending; this one element is so convoluted and unconvincing it drags down what's otherwise an atmospheric and effective film into something resembling a forgettable episode of The X Files.

Vincent Price Broods Over His Dead Wife's Portrait (Yet Again)
Roger Corman's cycle of Poe-inspired movies goes into full-on comedy mode with this tale of squabbling magicians (played by Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff). It is, obviously, only very loosely inspired by Poe's poem, but then you can only stretch 108 lines of verse so far.

The fun is in the performances, with the veteran cast members competing to ham it up more extravagantly. Also knocking about the lower reaches of the cast list is Jack Nicholson, really showing not much sign of the talent that would earn him so many Oscar nominations in later years.

Knockabout stuff, but well played and often very funny. Not actually much of a horror movie, though, certainly by modern standards.

If you haven't seen this.. What are you waiting for!?!
When it comes to Stephen King movie adoptions you really never know what you're going to get but Carrie is by far and arguably the best.

Sissy Spacek is today one of the single greatest castings ever she embodies Carrie so perfectly and it's always been my biggest issues with the remakes. Sissy (while I mean this with all the love in the world) is just so awkward looking and while not ugly she's also not the cutest and it's just what sells her version of Carrie so perfectly, you feel for her you cheat for her but also she freaking terrifies you.

If you've never seen Carrie definitely look it up it's one of the best horror movies out there and just so iconic.

A Mixed Bag
Full review here:

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom started well. Most things to do with the island, volcano and all, worked for me. There was even a moment that genuinely had an emotional impact on me and I wasn't expecting that at all. The wheels fell off for me though as soon as the setting changed. Whilst I appreciate the horror tone that it was going for, it all felt a bit B movie and so far removed from what made me fall in love with the franchise in the first place. The ending was intriguing and opens up some interesting possibilities for what's next, but on the whole, this was a real mixed bag.

Whats Reality
Cube 2- Hypercube- is wired and you probley have to watch it multiplte times to fully understand it. Im going to watch it again, just because i need to understand it more.

The Plot: Without remembering how they got there, several strangers awaken in a prison of cubic cells, some of them booby-trapped. There's onetime cop Quentin (Maurice Dean Wint), scientist Holloway (Nicky Guadagni), young math genius Leaven (Nicole de Boer), master of escapes Rennes (Wayne Robson), autistic savant Kazan (Andrew Miller) and architect Worth (David Hewlett), who might have more information on the maze than he lets on. The prisoners must use their combined skills if they are to escape.

Its good horror movie, but you have to watch it multiplte times to fully understand it.

The Legends Come True
Urban Legend- is a really good movie. I love the concept/plot of the film. The cast is really good plus it has cameoes from horror icons: Robert Englund, Brad Dourif and Danielle Harris.

The plot; A university is beset by a rash of gruesome murders that resemble old urban legends. When her friend Michelle (Natasha Gregson Wagner) is killed by someone hiding in her car, Natalie (Alicia Witt) begins to notice the pattern. Her suspicions grow stronger when her own roommate is strangled to death. Soon the quiet college campus is transformed into hunting grounds for a maniac, and Natalie struggles to find the killer and stop the bloodshed before she becomes the next victim.

Its a really good film and highly recordmend it.

Stuggle To Survive
Wind Chill- is a good horror flick, that does have twist and turns all thoughout the flick. Its slow at first, but it does get intresting in the middle and end. Emily Blunt is really good in this film.

The plot: Just before their university campus goes quiet for the winter break, a young woman (Emily Blunt) asks a classmate (Ashton Holmes) for a lift home. The two students set off on their trip and begin to get to know each other. But, when a reckless motorist drives them off the road, they find themselves stranded in the snow on a remote highway. As the night grows colder, the two are confronted by a horde of menacing apparitions -- and struggle to escape with their lives.

Its a good movie.

Candyman (2021)
Candyman (2021)
2021 | Horror
In short, Nia DaCosta has crafted a wonderfully slow burning horror that takes the series in a fresh direction whilst nicely paying tribute to the original.
Candyman is a film that relishes in it's pacing, making the most of it's almost 'mystery' narrative, and expanding the wider Candyman lore whilst still feing familiar.
The whole cast is great. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is always solid whatever he's doing and here is no different. The whole movie is visually wonderful. There are countless shots that are memorable and inspired, and the cinematography gave me chills multiple times throughout.
The scares are seldom, leaning more towards a generally unsettling tone that builds into a horrifically blood curdling finale that almost had me cheering in the cinema.
To conclude - go and see Candyman. It's fucking great.
