High and Low (1963)
1963 | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

"Kurosawa’s High and Low is one of the greatest and most contained crime thrillers ever made, with the first half largely confined to one location, and the second half venturing out into a real and deeply divided world. Brian De Palma’s Blow Out is a nihilistic portrait of political corruption, featuring John Travolta at his most blazingly charismatic. These are without a doubt two of the films that made me want to make films. They’re that inspiring."

Fred Durst directs this John Travolta/Devon Sawa vehicle that finds a mentally "different", Hollywood obsessed Moose (Travolta) tangled into a deadly web of admiration gone sideways.

I've actually seen a fair amount of vitriol thrown at this film from critics and audiences and it's a bit puzzling to me. There are, as pointed out in many reviews across the web, parts of the movie that seem to lack direction and look like missed opportunities. While there are certainly some of those (aren't there always) there are some good things here , too. I actually wonder if Durst included some of those things in order to move forward the fact that Moose is unstable in so many ways and lacks focus on anything of actual relevance in his life.

At the very least, this is worth a watch is you have some free time.

One of Tarantino's best
The lives of Two Thugs, A mobsters wife, A boxer, two thieves and a messed up cop into severe S&M are put on display is this multi out of sequence scene movie with an amazing soundtrack. We see death, love, desception, greed and plain old murder in this high speed movie. If you miss one part of any story than you will be truly lost like with almost many Tarantino movies plot ans story is everything.

This movie brought John Travolta back to life and rebooted his career.

"Animal House is a classic. You should have a DVD copy of it, you should stream it, you should just have it always. You should get the celluloid, and have it playing in your backyard. It is brilliantly written, based off of a National Lampoon article about college life. I personally love John Belushi. I love the casting in this because everyone looks like they’re probably 50-years-old to be honest, and yet they’re in college. (At the time, that’s the way things worked: Grease had John Travolta, so you’re like, really, does he look like a high school kid?) But everybody was cast perfectly in [Animal House]. There are so many subtle jokes. It makes you cheer. You see a young Kevin Bacon, [he] makes a cameo. There’s great music. There are so many quotable lines, and it is definitely a go-to comedy for me."

Nice try.
Was excited to see something new from John Travolta and then was surprised to see that this was a Fred Durst film. The film plays out in a mixed bag of missed opportunity. You're unsure throughout the film who the director is wanting you to root for or what the message he is trying to relay. The plot, a familiar trope, has a few holes that are too glaring to ignore, as does the attempted neat little bow ending that fails on several levels. Did love several easter eggs splashed through the movie, though. Overall, it is another case of a great actor caught in a movie that falls short and could have been so much more.

Get Off My Train
The Taking of Pelham 123- i have seen this movie about 7 times now, and its a good movie. Full of drama, suspense and thrills. Not alot of action though. When I watched the first couples times, i didnt realize it was a remake. It wasnt until like the 4th or 5th time, i realize it was a remake. Both Denzel and John were excellent in this film. I really liked John as the villian and wish he can play more villians, cause he is really good as the bad guy.

The plot: Chaos reigns in the New York City subway system when heavily armed criminals, led by a mastermind named Ryder (John Travolta), hijack a subway train and threaten to kill everyone on board unless a large ransom is paid. Dispatcher Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) uses his extensive knowledge of the transit system in a bid to outwit the hijackers and save the hostages, but one question remains: even if the hijackers get their money, how can they possibly escape?

Its a highly entertaining movie, and a must watch film.

"Pulp Fiction was probably one of the first films I ever saw that really kind of took effect on me. I was about four years old — obviously wasn’t supposed to be seeing that film; my sister kind of sneaked it out and we got to see it. She’s older than me. That was something I always used to watch. I loved the scenes with John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson; when I was older I could understand a little more. It was funny, me and my sister would have this little running thing where we’d know the lines to Ezekiel 25:17. My sister actually bought me a wallet that had “Bad Mother F**ker” written on it. But yeah, Tarantino. That was where my appreciation of directors began. It was beyond the actors at that point. Everything he’s touched I’ve loved. I became a huge fan of him and his work."

Gotti (2018)
Gotti (2018)
2018 | Biography, Crime, Drama
I've learned that I must come to accept that we may never again see the quality of gangster films that Hollywood churned out during the 70's-90's. Gotti is another example of a poorly executed attempt to retell a story that deserves to be told, but misses the mark by about a million miles.

John Travolta can only be partially blamed for this failure. He was exactly what you would expect him to be if you have ever seen his acting ability. The story he was attempting to convey was the true criminal. Convoluted and disoriented from the start, it was never able to get on its feet, let alone take a step in a forward direction. I'm not sure there is any actor alive who could have made up for the deficiencies everywhere you look in this movie.

I've definitely seen much worse, even in this genre. But I had high hopes and they were abruptly shattered.
