Karen David does her job well: look good while kicking ass.

Fight scenes are well executed

Sets and locations are pretty

Did we need this? I feel like we didn't need this....

Unnecessary and derivative, but not bad for direct-to-video.

Was this necessary? Did we really need to examine the Scorpion King's childhood and early adulthood? The film raises more questions than it resolves, in that now they have a thriving kingdom to dispose of somehow before the events of the original film. That said, the film is decently fun to watch. The performances aren't any worse than you'd expect from a movie like this, even better in some cases. Michael Copon was even trying to infuse the character with some of The Rock's mannerisms, unless that was unintentional. The fights are fun to watch, which is mostly the point here. The scenery, locations, and general production design is on point. Bottom line: it's not great, but it's better than I feared.

Ok I am a bit bias when it comes to this book. There are people who probably would like this I am not one. It wasn't the story I wanted him to write and I'm a bit bitter about it because this is supposedly the last Mithgar story. It is an unnecessary story and could have been an ok to good short story. There is more of the piecemeal to this story than needs be, as we see how each race and kingdom reacts to the High King being overthrown and the villains are a bit comical and in case of Nunde gross (necromancers are disgusting). There is little character development instead it builds upon the history and geography of Mithgar at the beginning of each chapter. Although this is interesting and does pertain to things in the upcoming chapter it is also distracting and feels very detached. Truthfully the writing tone doesn't remind me of McKiernan.

Thrilling and eerie film adaptation

*I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
It has been a number of years since I watched Pan's Labyrinth, but remember it as being a dark, twisted fairy tale set during the second world war. The book keeps that feel, we are introduced to Ofelia, a quiet bookish young girl who is moving with her mother to live with her stepfather, as he tries to break a group of Spanish rebels, ahead of the birth of her half-brother.
Ofelia sees some unusual statues and artefacts in the woods and soon meets the Faun, who sets her a mission to return to take her place as the princess of the Underground Kingdom.
There follows a brilliant mix of Ofelia's real life, the despicable exploits of Franco's army, and the fairy tale world she steps into.
This is a very short, immersive fairy tale with lots of nice side-stories that all weave into the book in some form.
