"The beautiful and concentrated final masterpiece of an utterly original writer, set in early 19th-century Germany. Fitzgerald pays us the compliment of trusting our intelligence and counting on our close attention, which will be overwhelmingly rewarded."

"Pure magic. Every fashion film and NYU undergraduate thesis takes its cues from this lyrical masterpiece. In college I tried to make a satirical remake entitled Lunchtime at Dangling Boulder, but all my actors slept too late."

Roma is visually breathtaking and expertly directed; the storytelling is sentimental and heartbreaking, but the film is also problematic enough to warrant speculation regarding its status as a masterpiece.

I never felt this movie was a masterpiece of any kind. It gained so much status and following for the obvious and tragic reason. Director Proyas did refine his art and made some great films...until Goes of Egypt.

"For complete submersion in a novelistic world I’d choose Edward P. Jones’ epic masterpiece, “The Known World.” A universe unto itself, there are terrible moments and beautiful revelations about a black slave owner and the many lives around him."

"Ozu was a master, and this is his masterpiece. This beautiful family drama is a textured poem about changing family ties and misunderstandings between generations. A portrait of postwar Tokyo and the changes that can come to different generations."

"Vertigo is a perfect nightmare. Perfect. It’s a dream, and it’s stunning. It’s so dark and obsessive, and it came from this director who claimed to only want to entertain the audiences. But that’s not true; it’s a masterpiece."
