Andy K (10821 KP) rated The Matrix (1999) in Movies

Do you remember the first time you saw this?
I think for a lot of people, The Matrix was one of their very first DVD purchases as it was once of the first major releases that sold extremely well.
Having recently upgraded my original DVD to a Matrix trilogy Blu Ray collection, I was anxious to give the film another viewing. Boy was I not disappointed.
Citing the obvious breakthrough visual effects as a marvel at the time for their truly unique vision, the story and ideas presented in the film are still really what stands out. The riveting thought-provoking vision and cinematic experience of watching the original Matrix film are still a unique experience and one which is tough to beat.
Say what you want about the sequels, the original film is still a masterpiece.

Greatest horror movie ever made
I watched this movie when I was 8 years old on VHS back in 1984. It was just before the VRC(video recordings act) came into being. It changed my life it changed the way I watch horror. First time I watched this film I was like this is the coolest film ever. Now at the age of 43 I watched loads of horror movies but nothing comes close to this. OK maybe Halloween as yes that is a classic also. Some ppl prefer Halloween to this but for me texas chainsaw will always be my no 1 film. Its a cinematic masterpiece of film making. Most of the main cast and crew have now past on with only a few left alive unfortunately. So I rate this 10/10.
Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated Halloween (2007) in Movies

Rob Zombie was an inspired choice to helm the 2007 reboot of the series and the resulting film was very good indeed. Opting to focus more on Michael’s backstory was an intriguing change to the formula and a risky one at that.
Many fans concluded that it lessened the impact of Michael’s murders. Showing him as an abused child took away the supernatural elements that made Carpenter’s masterpiece so terrifying in 1978.
Nevertheless, I thought the idea worked well, and although Zombie’s film is a case of style over substance in some sequences, it’s a good reboot and one that manages to raise itself well above its horror stablemates at the time of release.
It also had an absolutely cracking soundtrack, but the less said about the disappointing sequel the better.

Sean Farrell (9 KP) rated Station Eleven in Books

There's a good reason this book has been appearing on so many of this year's best lists. It tells the tale of our world in the not too distant future, after a major flu outbreak has all but wiped out humanity, something which is all too possible and portrayed here with frightening realism. A few survivors are followed throughout the story, as they struggle to survive, both before and after the catastrophe. The prose is beautiful and the characters wonderful, the plot may seem to meander at times, but it all comes together in the end, to show how the actions of one can have an effect on so many, and even the most seemingly inconsequential events can have such great meaning over the course of time. A literary masterpiece, and easily one of the year's best books.

Unforgettable
Director Claude Lanzmann, who recently passed away at the age of 92, spent a significant portion of his life working on interviews, editing and putting together this immaculate epic masterpiece portrait of the Holocaust through the words of people who were there and lived through the torture.
I sobbed for days after watching the more than 13 hours of footage from the documentary and the DVD extras. Some of the descriptions and scenes were so moving I actually had to pause for a moment to collect myself before continuing.
I purchased when Criterion had one of their 50% off sales and it was well worth it. You will be changed forever as a person after watching this and you will start to think all your first-world problems are minuscule in comparison.

Outrageous
I watch the movie version of this multiple times growing up, but I had never read the book. After reading the book I must say that it and the movie are both wonderfully told stories. The book differs greatly from the movie, but Forrest adventures could never be contained in the short time frame of a single movie.
The great thing about this book is that it is not contained to a single adventure. Even after reading it I don't understand how so many stories manage to fit into a single novel. Each of Forrest's stories flows nicely into the next. This causes the ridiculousness of each adventure to make perfect sense in the overall story.
Anyone who enjoys the movie needs to read this book. It is an easy to read masterpiece that stands far above other stories of its kind.

Sci-fi horror at its finest
A simple concept of a group of astronauts returning from a far away mission and awakened prematurely by their computer to investigate an unknown signal so thy can investigate. What they find within the hostile environment of the strange planet started an entire new genre of sci-fi horror which has not been equaled even to this day.
You can make an argument which is better Alien or Aliens; however, Aliens is an action film whereas the original Alien is claustrophobic, uneasy, foreboding and a masterpiece.
The stunning visuals accompanied by a stellar cast and a masterful look and feel make Alien a true one-of-a-kind and something that has been mimicked and copied over the years with varying degrees of success without equaling the original.

Cassandra Dark
This is not just entertainment this is a savvy social statement. Not only that but it's got a hidden meaning of one person you don't discover until the last page. That person will remain with me forever because I know there are hundreds of her out there today. I want to do something to help her and I wish there was something in the back that tells me how I can. Despite all that I imagine this being shown in ITV as one of their gripping well plotted crime dramas. It's just absolute perfection in plot and character and deserves to be remembered as a masterpiece. Now I am going to Google charities and fund out what I can do.
