This Debut Isn’t as Sweet as I’d Hoped For
Becca Ransom has returned home to Larch Haven, Vermont, and has taken over the chocolate making in her family’s chocolate shop. She is loving being around her family and friends again, but she isn’t as happy to see that Archie Smith is still being obnoxious in town, opposing just about everything. When he is found floating in the canals in town, everyone is shocked to learn it is murder. When Becca’s grandfather becomes the prime suspect, can Becca figure out what really happened?

I’ve been wanting to try a book by this author for a while, so I figured the start of a new series was the perfect time to do that. Plus, I can’t resist a chocolate theme. That aspect made me drool. However, the mystery could have been stronger. We got more theorizing than clue gathering, although Becca did still reach a logical solution. Speaking of Becca, I really appreciated how mature she was, realizing her own fault in one particular sub-plot. And I loved her and the rest of the regulars. Likewise, the setting in fantastic – I’d go visit in a heartbeat if it were real. While I wish the plot were stronger, I’m planning to visit again when the sequel comes out.

I received this book as a gift from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

What happens if, at thirteen, you wake up and all the adults from your village have disappeared? What happens if you are suddenly surrounded by a thick, dense, immoveable fog? Is it there to keep you in... or others out?

This is the riddle that Sophia and the rest of the children are faced with early one morning. Then time skips on and you meet Tressa, Sophia's granddaughter. She is someone who has had to deal with the blows in her life and this means that she is not one to cower down and hide behind someone else.

Something is changing in the village and it is Tressa's turn to venture outside. Those who have gone before have never been seen or heard from. Once Tressa steps into the fog, all bets are off and she has to think on her feet.

There are twists and turns aplenty in this book with well described and believable characters for the most part. The one that I couldn't exactly gel with Henry but he was only a bit-part anyway. If you like the more mature fantasy then I think you will really enjoy this one. Definitely recommended.

Sophie’s Next Chapter is One Fans Will Love
Sophie Foster has just learned that her friend Keefe has run away to the Forbidden Cities in order to hide from the changes that are being forced on him. As much as Sophie wants to try to find him, she decides that her best course of action might be to find a way to stop the next step in the plans for Keefe. Meanwhile, her friends have a less than positive reaction to the action she just took against their enemy, the Neverseen. Will this drive a wedge in her circle of friends?

If that teaser doesn’t make sense to you, then this book isn’t for you – yet. You really need to read these books in order. Heck, I wish I’d had time to reread the last one before I dove into this one. Fans will be thrilled with what we get, however. I only felt the pacing slowed down a couple of times, which is saying something for a 700 page book. We definitely got some advancement on the overall story as well. Meanwhile, the characters continue to mature, and I loved how that lead to some natural progressions in relationships. Sophie’s world continues to be fun as well. Naturally, there’s a cliffhanger, which means I’m already anxious for the next book.
