David McK (3610 KP) rated The hunger games ballard of songbirds and snakes (2023) in Movies
Jul 3, 2024
I've read the original Hunger Games trilogy.
I'd seen the quartet of movies based on those books.
I haven't read the prequel, on which this is based.
So I had little knowledge of what to expect, going in, other than that it centred on a young Cornelius Snow before he becomes the tyrannical president of the original films.
This film is very clearly split into 3 acts (each proceeded by a card naming such): The Mentor, The Prize and The Peacekeeper - with the first two of those three acts the better.
Final act drags on a bit.
The middle section is the bit set during the 10th annual Hunger Games, which - here - are far more 'basic', far more 'real' than that of the Jennifer Lawrence films, with Rachel Zeigler's Lucy Gray also more a performer forced to become a warrior than Lawrence's Everdeen (the exact opposite).

GameCritics (290 KP) rated UNCHARTED 4: A Thief's End in Video Games
Sep 21, 2017
If this really is the last we see of the Uncharted series, A Thief's End will have been a remarkable and surprisingly inventive farewell. More so than either sequel before it, Uncharted 4 builds on the formula in unexpected but natural ways

Dean (6927 KP) rated Star Trek: First Contact (1996) in Movies
Oct 4, 2017
I'm not a Trekkie fan by any means but I have to say I'm suprised so many rate this so highly? I found it rather slow and boring and void of any real action whatsoever. The borg can just be walked past half the time, hardly an intimidating or a fearsome enemy. The latest Star Trek film going back to how the original crew got together is the best by far.

GameCritics (290 KP) rated Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest in Video Games
Oct 10, 2017
The intense difficulty is squarely aimed at veteran Fire Emblem players, and its satisfying campaign is full of variety and challenge. And even though a win or loss can down to sheer luck, I walked away either satisfied or eager to give it another shot

GameCritics (290 KP) rated Super Meat Boy in Video Games
Oct 20, 2017
Super Meat Boy is an exercise in patience. You may in fact deplore it in the first one or two hours due to its unforgiving gameplay and level design, but if you take the time to consume much of what it has to offer, you may just acquire a taste for it.

GameCritics (290 KP) rated Spelunker Party! in Video Games
Nov 2, 2017
A hardcore yet cute platformer that you can play in its entirety with up to four players locally or online. What a novelty! I, for one, can see myself attempting to 100% this game by annoying my friends to play with me till they cave (pun intended)

GameCritics (290 KP) rated Super Lucky's Tale in Video Games
Nov 6, 2017
Super Lucky’s Tale is a fine 3D platformer. It blends in more types of platforming than most entries in the genre and keeps the collect-a-thon to a minimum. The core of the game is platforming and that keeps the pace of the action fairly fast.

Erika (17789 KP) rated The Night Manager - Season 1 in TV
Nov 26, 2017
This mini-series was one of the best things that premiered in 2016. I actually liked the updates, and the changes that were made from the original le Carre novel. I loved that Burr's character ended up being female, and played by Olivia Coleman. Tom Hiddleston did fantastic as Pine, and Hugh Laurie was pitch-perfect. It also holds up through multiple viewings, which is a good thing.
