Dean (6927 KP) rated Long Weekend (Nature's Grave) (2008) in Movies

Awful remake
30 years on and we have a remake of the little known, but very weird film Long Weekend (1978). I saw the original when I was very young and at the end you just think WTF?! This is almost by the numbers remake, so I knew what was gong to happen, which effected my overall opinion. I remember the first being a lot more tense, scary and jumpy. This just didn't have the same impact. Check out the 78 version of you want some real creepy thrills!

David McK (3547 KP) rated The Transporter Refueled (2015) in Movies

The first Transporter movie is pretty much the definition of a guilty pleasure, due in no small part to Jason Statham in the lead role and some impressive stunt choreography.
The second and third? Largely forgettable, almost completely abandoning the limits of plausability.
This one is, essentially, a reboot of the series: the same basic premise is there; the same reliance on car chases and brawls in roughly the same setting (the French Riviera) and even elements of the same plot, but this one sorely misses the almost magnetic personality of its original leading man.

The storyline was well written, though the fact that the kids were aware of the financial issues is a big no for me. The kids experiencing the magic and the adults not believing them is a bit overdone as well. The family experience is very relatable. The magic the kids experienced was not overdone and was excellently planned. I never saw the original, but this movie was excellent.

A fool off his guard could fall and fall hard for Disney’s surprisingly beguiling Aladdin (2019)
In terms of what you might be expecting, Disney’s live-action adaptation of their own animated take on Aladdin is much more than a diamond in the rough. Against the odds, and certainly expectations, Guy Ritchie and his likeable and talented cast have managed to deliver a cave of wonders which honours the original classic and yet still manages to find enough new angles to make the story feel new again...

Peter G. (247 KP) rated Django Unchained (2012) in Movies
Jun 5, 2019
A Tarantino classic in my book, well scripted and acted with so many great moments and even a Cameo role from the original Django, Franco Nero.
The revenge plot is so well put together and the storyline riveting, Tarrentino has this thing about casting actors we haven't seen in a while and then getting a near career best performance from them, Don Johnson being a highlight. It all moves at a great pace with the finale and shootout scenes and dialogue adding further polish to this stunning movie.

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated X-Men: First Class (2011) in Movies

After Kingsman: The Secret Service director Matthew Vaughn left X-Men: The Last Stand because of its rushed production schedule, Fox decided to bring him back to direct this reboot of the series. Things worked well overall, though the introduction of James McAvoy as Professor X did draw some criticism. Michael Fassbender’s role as young Magneto went down very well but fans still missed the original actors. The film was nicely paced but without a compelling villain, the overall script suffered.

Dean (6927 KP) rated Brightburn (2019) in Movies
Jun 10, 2019 (Updated Jun 10, 2019)
Evil Superman
This had a good premise, what if a person from another world arrived here with superpowers... But was evil. There are quite a few nods and scenes that will remind you of Superman. Clearly the inspiration for this film. It's definitely something original to have a horror like this. It is quite gory in places, fairly creepy but not scary. You'll find it fun if you fancy a horror film with a twist. Although it still left quite a lot of ideas to be explored.

Red Otter (340 KP) rated Terraforming Mars: Hellas & Elysium in Tabletop Games
Jun 10, 2019
Terraformong Mars: Hellas and Elysium is a small expansion that is a double sided board that overlays the original board to add new terrain, awards and milestones to TM. The new placement bonuses ocean areas change up the usual optimal placements, while the awards and milestones change what an optimal engine is. It adds enough variety to the game play for it's price, but doesn't add new cards or corporations. Unfortunately, the explanation for the new awards and milestones are on a not very durable sheet, so make sure to protect it well.

Before there was Toretto, there was Riddick.
One for the old-dark-house/monsters-from-outer-space lovers :)
A passanger ship crash-lands on a supposedly colonised planet. The inhabitants are all mysteriously missing. Turns out there are other inhabitants on the planet, no one knew about.
Ship's passengers find themselves suddenly dependant on the nasty mass-murderer previously chained up in the hold.
Nothing earth-shatteringly original here, but it's good creepy entertainment delivered well.
And Riddicks eyes are waaaayyy cooler than anything F & F served up 😆

Beautifully thematic and serious Cooperative Tabletop Experience
At the end of it all, if you’re lucky enough to have pulled off the impossible and taken out Hitler, the rulebook will give you an idea of how many millions of lives could have been saved if history went with the alternate path that your victory provided. It’s a sobering moment after an exciting victory or defeat and serves as a reminder of the gravity of history behind this experience.
