Rev Run recommended Creed (2015) in Movies (curated)

Creed (2015)
Creed (2015)
2015 | Drama

"I don’t know if it’s too early to say it, but I’m really in love with Creed. It made me cry… It touched me when Rocky was talking to Adrian and Paulie at the graveyard and he said, “Everything’s good. Bills are paid.” And I was like, ‘Wow.’ I loved his peace and his contentment. At one moment, you wanna take over the world, and the next minute, you just want the essentials. Him reading the newspaper there at the graveyard — it just felt right to me that he was finally content. I like the entire Rocky franchise and this brought it full circle for me. I love the Philadelphia theme and the music from Meek Mill. And instead of climbing to the top of a mountain, Michael B. Jordan was running with the motorcycles. He was doing the new things Philadelphia people are doing."

Dripping with nostalgia
Creed finally becomes WBC champion. Now a new challenge is forthcoming. The son of the man who killed his father has become a boxer as well and wants to take on Creed. His father's loss to Rocky sent his father down a downward spiral losing face with the State and having his mother leave him so he is out for revenge.

Creed has to again wrestle with his own emotions about the death of his famous father and also still wanting to get out of his shadow and strike his own course.

After the initial brawl ends in controversy, Creed is beaten physically and emotionally. He becomes engaged and also finds out he is going to have a child which changes his perspective on life and helps him try and flush out what is important to him.

His pal Rocky is torn as to stay with Creed as this brings out old memories for him as well and also the desire to maybe reconnect with his estranged son. He doesn't want Creed to fight for the wrong reasons.

Michael B Jordan really comes into his own in this film and displays not only intense physical prowess, but emotional range and muscles as well.

The film hits all the usual notes you have seen countless times in the Rocky/Creed franchise. If you have been a lifelong fan or coming to the film just during the Creed portion, the nostalgia of seeing Dolph Lundgren (who couldn't act his way out of a paper bag) and Rocky in the ring together again this time alongside their proteges in the ring is exciting and worth the reteam.

The boxing scenes are very well done; however, so are the slower emotional scenes which is really what the film is about. The relationships and bonds we all need and search for our entire lives.

Well worth it.

Tobin Bell recommended Jeremiah Johnson (1972) in Movies (curated)

Jeremiah Johnson (1972)
Jeremiah Johnson (1972)
1972 | Action, Western

"There is a film called Jeremiah Johnson that was directed by Sydney Pollack with Robert Redford. It’s about 1830s mountain men, and I’ve always been fascinated by those guys who, in the 1830s, when the West was still totally wild ? there were no homesteaders, no settlers ? guys who would go out there and live in the mountains amidst the Indians and carve out a living, catching beaver and muskrat and whatever else they were catching, skinning them and bringing the hides back, so they could be turned into hats for fashionable people in London. There’s some really great music in it. I loved the nature and the Rocky Mountains; I think it actually was shot in the early days of the Sundance institute out in the Salt Lake area, although the story has it happening in the Rocky Mountains, probably a little east of there. Montana, Wyoming, that area. So, love that film."

Good, not great
Since this movie has came out people have praised it immensely and it has even garnered some Oscar buzz and I was looking forward to seeing this movie for months especially since I am a long time fan of the Rocky franchise, but when I saw it, I have to say I was disappointed, if you are going to see a boxing movie from 2015, see Southpaw.

"The Room has been called the worst movie ever made, but it is also a cult favorite and has become the new Rocky Horror Picture Show in the midnight movie circuit. Sestero, one of the actors in the film, relates the twisted story of the making of The Room, and beautifully captures the admirable will, and the insane solipsism that is Tommy Wiseau, the mad and ultimately sympathetic man behind getting such a movie made."
