Low budget meta horror

Shudder exclusive 'ruin me' runs a similar line to 'Fear Inc' or 'Hellhouse LLC', with a meta horror experience blurring the lines between reality and fiction.
The cast is a mix of early 2000s tropes, the goth couple, the chubby film nerd, the silent loner etc on a slasher themed survival weekend where events take a turn for the bloody.
They twist and turn a few times, toying with the viewer using an unreliable narrator, our protagonist Alex, whom you aren't ever really sure is in the real world.
Not much will surprise you, but it is a fun trope laden film with no real pretence of being anything other than it is...a low budget meta slasher.
Not a bad 90 mins though, and it's watchable enough so long as you don't mind the sometimes clunky humour and meta elements getting front and centre.

Dean (6926 KP) rated Fear Street Part Two: 1978 (2021) in Movies

Cool 70's vibe (1 more)
Cool soundtrack
Summer Camp Slasher
Part 2 set mainly in '78 largely serves to give a back story of how one of Shadyside's residents previously survived the curse of the Witch. So we get a Slasher film that follows the old Summer Camp setting that was popular back in the day.
While again it does very well to set the scene for '78 with the Fashion, Music to give it the right vibe for the era. It takes a little while to get to the Horror side of the film. It doesn't have the energy of the first installment or sense of urgency. Gore fans should be happy though and in terms of the story around the curse of the Witch this continues on well from the first film.
Overall a good second installment similar in style to the first and one horror fans will enjoy.

2 iconic characters in the same film (1 more)
Much better than most of the Friday the 13th films
Slasher fan heaven
A pretty cool hack'n'slash film. Almost tongue in cheek at times, it could almost be a spoof of both series of films. The effects are cool and there is plenty of blood for gore fans. Nice to see a recent film starring these two cult film characters giving the fans what they like.
The Craggus (360 KP) rated Happy Death Day 2U (2019) in Movies
Mar 5, 2019
Happy Death Day 2 U (2019) brings us a happy return to the big screen for Jessica Rothe. #Review
Planting its tongue firmly in cheek, the sequel to 2017’s delightfully peppy “Happy Death Day” takes the timey-wimey slasher story and gives it a decidedly sci-fi twist that sees it play out like an over-caffeinated mash-up of “Back To The Future Part II” and “Russian Doll”...

Dean (6926 KP) rated My Bloody Valentine 3-D (2009) in Movies
Mar 10, 2018
A pretty average slasher film and definitely based around the 3-D, it uses as many scenes as it can for this effect. I only saw it on DVD but you can just tell what scenes, effects were done for the 3-D parts. Very bloody and gory in places, with a slight twist if you can call it that. Overall pretty good but no doubt more fun in 3-D mode.

Very low budget (2 more)
Bad acting
Nothing funny for a comedy horror
Watch Friday the 13th instead
Another low budget Horror currently on Amazon prime. Also another one to miss. Starts quite light hearted and tries to recreate the 80's B movie slasher films. Although nothing particularly funny for a horror comedy. The last part of the film doesn't fit with the rest of it. Sadly another low budget offering not worth your time.

Nice set design (1 more)
Good Cast
Very poor plot (1 more)
Terrible Cgi scenes
One for the Black list
The most recent Sky Original film set at a Black Site facility. Despite a talented cast the plot and story are quite simple. Rather slow and boring to get going for a short film. Almost more Slasher film than action once a character goes on the rampage. The apparent twist was obvious from the start. One to miss.
LeftSideCut (3778 KP) rated Fear Street Part One: 1994 (2021) in Movies
Jul 3, 2021
From it's very Scream-esque cold open, to it's Intruder style finale, Fear Street: 1994 is an unabashed love letter to the slasher genre that benefits from a cast of likable characters, and doesn't shy away from the gory stuff.
The group of friends that the narrative revolves around share some decent chemistry. The vibe that surrounds them isn't to dissimilar to the characters in Scary Stories or even Stranger Things. They're written to be rooted for, which makes all the more impact when the final third comes knocking and the body count piles up. The various killers on the loose are clearly inspired by other slasher icons, but the multiple-killer aspect makes them interesting enough, even if it's just surface level, and the overarching narrative to do with witchcraft is intriguing.
Unfortunately, the pacing is a bit off. 1994 really takes it's time to get to where it wants to be, and the first half drags in places. It also falls into the Suicide Squad trap of spaffing out well known songs, one after another, without any reprieve. One of my absolute pet peeves in modern movies by the way, but thankfully, this doesn't last for the whole runtime.
Overall, 1994 is a fun, if flawed horror ride, with some solid gore to boot, that will surely offer something for any slasher fans out there. Genuinely looking forward to the next two installments over the coming weeks, and it's always a bonus when horror in general gets a big push from the likes of Netflix.
