The sun is dying and the Icarus project is sent in to fix the problem. Robert Capa and the Icarus team go out into space in hopes of re-igniting the sun with a stellar bomb that's equal in mass to Manhattan island. It's been sixteen months since the team first left earth and they're about to enter the blackout zone...a bit earlier than expected. This means they won't be able to send or receive messages back home after they reach this zone. This is only the beginning of their problems as they realize that no matter how prepared they thought they were...things can and will go wrong in phenomenal ways.
I've got to say right off the bat that this is one of my favorite films to come out in recent years. I think it's an almost perfect film. The film had a science advisor and it shows as it's a very intelligent film. The Danny Boyle films I've seen have been good, but I think this one is my favorite thus far. It's another film that is beautifully shot. Every frame is just oozing with vibrant colors and Boyle's style bleeds through in every scene. Cillian Murphy is impressive, as always. He's another actor I feel deserves more credit than he's given as he impresses me more and more as his talent seems to shine that much brighter in each film he's involved with. Chris Evans was the guy who surprised me in this. It's not a role you'd expect to see him in after seeing him in films like Not Another Teen Movie and Fantastic Four. He's in top form though and he fits into this role in ease. This is also one of the few films that I really enjoy the soundtrack, as well. When a soundtrack enhances the movie experience instead of taking away from it, it only makes the film that much better. This is one of those soundtracks.
As great as the film is, it's greatest strength is its biggest flaw. They did have a science advisor and it helps make the film more believable, more intelligent, etc. The things that were changed to add suspense or for whatever reason other than to make the film more believable or as factual as possible make the film seem a little farfetched at times. It's really only a minor nitpick and it doesn't take away from how superb this movie really is.
Sunshine is a film any science fiction or horror fan should see. It's mostly a science fiction film, but the last half or so is pure horror. There's definitely an Event Horizon feel to this film. It's an interesting formula that pays off pretty well in the end. The film looks fantastic as every shot seems to jump off the screen in vibrant color. It's very well written and pretty believable(given the circumstances). The acting is top notch and it's a film I highly recommend to anyone I can.

A story that has been done too many times before, and better than this...
The problem with Burlesque is that this is a story that has been done way too many times. Young girl moving to LA to follow her dreams, it’s a tired and overused plot and is just so predictable and dull. There are so many films that have done this so much better. And it is SO long. I can’t believe how long it drones on for. The soundtrack is fairly good but that’s probably one of the only few things going for this, and it isn’t helped by very badly timed lip syncing from everyone other than Cher - Christina Aguilera is the biggest culprit for this, surprisingly really considering her background, but I get very distracted watching a musical where the actions aren’t in time with the music.
Cast-wise, the majority are entirely forgettable with the exception of the usually fabulous Stanley Tucci. Cher is better than expected too, obviously a few years before she overdid it on the plastic surgery. Christina Aguilera isn’t great, she isn’t helped by a terrible script but I don’t really rate her as an actress. Whoever did her makeup should be sacked too, as apart from a few odd scenes where she looks natural, she looks horrendous.
Altogether this is just a boring and entirely lacklustre film, which is pretty bad when it’s a musical!

Wow!! I was hooked
I confess, I knew little about The Umbrella Academy before picking up the series on Netflix, but I am so glad I did. The series combined dark humour with an intriguing plot line and sprinkled a great sound track into the mix to create a truly unique show.
The series centres around a family, purchased as children by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and their mission to discover the cause of their fathers death as well as preventing the imminent apocalypse. Each of the children (adults in most cases by the time the series is set) have unique super powers, with the exception of Vanya, who has be partially excluded from family affairs as a result.
The casting of the show couldn’t have been any better, with a mix of characters you can take seriously and others who add a touch of humour to the show. Notably Robert Sheehan, who plays Klaus - I have been a fan of his work since Misfits, and Cameron Britton, who plays Hazel (An assassin who falls for Agnes, a waitress who is significantly older than himself). The series was well acted and a wide range of emotions were shown by the actors.
The only real downfall to the series was that it was so short (and ended on a cliff hanger, so please, please renew the show Netflix). I was left wanting more after episode 10.
I highly recommend watching this.

Euphoria... To The Tune Of ABBA

I was shocked when I realised it’s been 25 years since I saw this at the cinema. Filled with nostalgia I just had to leave a review here for what is one of my all time favourite movies.
The film relies heavily on the music of ABBA (although many other artists feature, check out the soundtrack), and the life of ugly ducking Muriel Heslop (played by the always wonderful Toni Collette).
A truly modern fairytale, with a real heart and soul, this movie with have you laughing and crying, with outstanding performances from all the cast.
Highlights are the scene where Muriel and friend Rhonda perform ‘Waterloo’ at karaoke (timed PERFECTLY to blend in with the aftermath of Rhonda putting Muriel’s bitchy as hell, so called ‘friends’ in their place), and the scene when Muriel walks down the aisle to ‘I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do.’ I have to confess I cried tears of joy when that song started playing.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film that has left me feeling so euphoric after watching it, as rom coms go, this one sets the standard amazingly high. And the scene where Rhonda says: “Stick your drink up your arse, Tanya, I would rather swallow razor blades than drink with you” will make anyone who has ever been picked on cheer along.

Halloween offers a solid follow up to a Horror classic
Full diclosure - The original Halloween is one of my absolute favourite horror films of all time, so I wasn't sure what to think when the trailers for this started knocking around - it looked good, but I've spent years being fooled by sequels and reboots.
Thankfully, I left cinema feeling pretty satisfied.
Halloween offers that same feeling of dread the original offered up, alongside a great soundtrack (John Carpenter take a bow).
In terms if story, this movie disregards all sequels that has come before and picks up with Michael Myers still imprisoned for what happened in the original.
Of course, he eventually gets loose to reign terror on Haddonfield once again (there's a glorious one shot scene when he eventually arrives in said town), and what follows is a suitably gory slasher, that mostly ticks all the right boxes.
Jamie Lee Curtis is back as Laurie Strode, but with somewhat of a Sarah Connor-esque makeover, and she's pretty badass - familiar yet fresh, as she fearlessly takes on a foe she's spent years preparing to face.
The rest of the cast were pretty take it or leave it for me, none leaving a lasting impact, and some plot points were a not needed (the whole story arc of The doctor springs to mind), but overall, a pretty solid horror flick that deserves your attention.

A Childhood Favourite
I've loved this film since I was about 3 years old and that's quite a while ago! I love the songs in the film's soundtrack and the quirky character Gene Wilder plays.
Wilder has some fantastic one liners and the children are brilliant, playing the obnoxious winners of the Golden Tickets. Charlie Bucket is very likeable and you feel for him, as he and family struggle to survive.
The only part of the film which I don't particularly care for, is the 'Wonkatania' boat scene, I found this particularly disturbing as a child.
The songs in this are very memorable. Considering the fact that I have probably watched this film 100's of times, I could sing all of them at the drop of a hat! This film has been a part of my life for so long, that most of my family could recite most of the film too!
This is one of my all time favourite films and a guilty pleasure. I have watched the Tim Burton adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel this film is based on and, although it had some nice additions from the original text, which did not feature in this version of the story, I much prefer this version.
If you want to watch a film full of magic and wonder, I suggest watching this film.
