Superheroes, time travel, doughnuts and talking chimps

Another day another superhero tv show - right?? Well this one is really something special. Was hooked from episode 1. The best way I can describe it is a not as dark watchmen tv series. Bunch of kids with powers adopted by man who turns them into a superhero team. Years later they reunite when their 'father' dies. Then happens time travel, drugs, assassins, talking chimps, bird watching, robots, JFK conspiracies, the apocalypse and doughnuts! Like watchmen this has an amazing soundtrack which adds to the quality of the show. This would get 10 out of 10 but I just find Ellen Page terrible and every scene with her just made me cringe so (SPOILER) when she turns out to be the villain (sort of) I was quite pleased!! Watch this show!!!

Brilliant acting
Krysten Ritter and David Tennant
Another brilliant Marvel TV series
Jessica Jones follows Daredevil as another Netflix original about a non-mainstream Marvel superhero. It also follows the same path that brings out the dark and gritty side of the Marvel universe. Not everything is black and white here, there's a lot of grey area and as a result the series poses a lot of questions you wouldn't get in the films.

Krysten Ritter is brilliant as Jones and is supported by a brilliant cast that includes David Tennant as the increasingly disturbing Kilgrave.

Superb twisted take on the superhero genre
I read these a few years ago, but following the recent superb TV series, I have decided to re-read them. Volume 1 brings together the first 6 issues of the comic.
This first volume gives an introduction to the boys, and their purpose, and the fact that the world is now full of twisted, power-hungry superheroes, who have corporate sponsorship.
Hughie is devastated when his girlfriend becomes collateral damage in a fight between supes, and is quickly invited into the boys to seek revenge.
Unlike the TV series, the boys don't go straight after The Seven, preferring a lower profile target to make their comeback known. They go after Teenage Kix, a group of young superheroes who engage in all manners of unsavoury antics behind closed doors. Through spying, blackmail and eventual violence, the boys take down this group and make their purpose known.
Brilliant artwork, fantastic dialogue and a real twisted, yet believable, storyline.

Did you ever dream of becoming a superhero? Thaddeus Sivana does. Bullied by his father and older brother because they think he is weak, Thaddeus dreams of becoming the most powerful being in the world. However, Wizard, the last remaining guardian of the secrets of the universe, doesn't think he is pure of heart and worthy of being a superhero. Thaddeus decides to become a supervillain and waits for a champion of the downtrodden, Captain Marvel (I refuse to call him Shazam since he IS Captain Marvel unlike Carol Danvers who got a promotion to Captain after being Ms Marvel for decades). A couple decades later, Billy Batson who was abandoned by his mother at a state fair spends his day researching and looking for the woman who abandoned him while running away from various foster homes. That is, until he is placed in a foster home full of damaged children. He learns the value of family while learning how to be a hero. I watched the TV series every Saturday growing up and while the movie is good, the show remains a pivotal time in my life.

Zachary Levi (0 more)
None of the rest of the Chuck TV series cast (0 more)
One of the better entries (at the time of reviewing) in DCs attempt at a shared universe, although (if I'm honest) I barely realised that it was part of that universe at all: yes, there's a couple of mentions of Superman and Batman et al, but they could easily be viewed similarly to how we talk about them.
I was also quite surprised by how dark/scary parts of this were for a child-friendly film, with it really only lightening up once the 14 year old Billy Batson gets his powers and transforms into Zachary Levis's adult superhero (but still with his child's mind).

With a subplot concerning family - one strand of which could probably have been handled better - and Levi knocking it out of the park (I'll admit, the TV series Chuck in which he starred is one of my favourites) as Shazam, this is one of the better entries in DC growing catalogue of movies.
