plot
In a city of humanoid animals, a hustling theater impresario's attempt to save his theater with a singing competition becomes grander than he anticipates even as its finalists' find that their lives will never be the same.
What lessons did you learn from this story (theme/moral)? What do you think others will learn from it?
Sometimes it takes others to bring out the best in you. No matter what you look like on the outside, something talented and awesome is secretly lurking on the inside. Always believe in yourself even if everyone, even the ones closet to you, doesn’t believe in you because the only person that needs to believe in you is yourself. When you hit rock bottom there is only one way to go… and that way is up, up and up.

"I think the next one was Dead Man Walking. One, it was a brilliant film with brilliant performances, but I thought the filmmaker put forth the question without giving us the answers. And I thought he did it masterfully. You know, it’s a question of capital punishment. It wasn’t preachy, it wasn’t didactic, it wasn’t sort of a polemic that you kind of go, “Let’s investigate this like an English class.” It was telling you a great story because, you know, all the audience wants to hear is what happened next. So it was telling you a great story, and based on the story telling I found my perspective changing. I had great sympathy for Sean Penn’s character and then suddenly I didn’t. And I thought he deserved exactly what he got. And then in the next fifteen minutes, my point of view would change. That’s why I thought it really involved you on an emotional level on the question of capital punishment. But even more than that I think it showed what film can do and what really great storytelling can do."

Why did I keep reading?
The answer is because clearly, I'm a bit masochistic. I have a strong opinion that while the occasional footnote is appropriate, if you use too many, you need to edit what you are writing. Gurwitch doesn't just use them a little too much; on each page of the book there was at least one, if not two of three.
Realistically, I also couldn't relate to much of her stories, which only made it more difficult to continue reading.

I am currently reading this. I'm on the second Massacre Island chapter. The first couple of chapters were not relatable nor enjoyable but reading about the previous generations of her family and their questionable life choices, careers, and hobbies was somewhat entertaining. I'll probably continue reading the book depending on how the next couple of chapters pan out. But it certainly isn't the best collection of essays/memoirs I've ever read.

Wow, if you ever need a reality check about how hard your life probably isn't this book is a way to do it. Not only do you read about an amazing survival story, that honestly I have no idea how this man did survive but you also learn about more than what a regular school history lesson would teach you about. My heart just hurt for this man on so many occasions throughout this book. How he continued to go on and get through everything is amazing! I would definitely reccomend this book.

I like the theme of this game. My friends and AI always go with a theme, so one might be safari animals, insects, water creatures. The hardest part is remembering what creature is what.. did you just destroy my burrowing, flying, long-necked elephants? I suppose you don't have to name the species you are creating. But we find that it adds more fun. I have played this in my classroom with my 5th grade students when learning about evolution. It was helpful for them to understand how certain species survive over others and how some adaptations stick where others just don't cut the genetic code.

Verging between Excellent and Very Good as I did stop what I was doing and actually sat and watched the film. The film goes off on all sorts of tangents which keep you wanting more and keeping the viewer intrigued, you don't get to tie all the pieces together until fairly near the end. Don't expect to watch a film about a corrupt accountant, it is so much more and surprisingly good.

A fairly decent low budget indie thriller. I didn't expect much having not heard of it, but it was ok and I did find the ending quite different. As with most films of this type there are countless occasions in the film that leave you thinking no one would do that, what you would do different in that situation. This film loses a bit of credibility because of that. Otherwise it's a decent modern thriller.

Utterly captivating. A masterful piece of good old fashioned story telling. (0 more)
A grimm fairytale
I haven't been so completely drawn into a book since I read Michael Ende's "Neverending Story" (hell mend you Disney for what you did to that exquisite novel). This is a heartachingly tender story of childhood bereavement and bewilderment. The tale is so skillfully woven I walked every step of the story with the lost and lonely little protagonist.
